Gilmore Girls’ Ending Ruined Luke and Lorelai’s Love Story – Here’s Why It Matters!

Despite being greatly cherished by many, the final season of “Gilmore Girls” didn’t quite live up to expectations, primarily because it failed to delve deeply into Luke and Lorelai’s relationship narrative. The gruff diner owner and the vivacious, coffee-fueled protagonist had been teetering on the edge of a romantic commitment for four seasons, culminating in their first kiss at the end of season 4. Their relationship progresses, with them dating in season 5 and becoming engaged in season 6. However, Luke finds out he has a 12-year-old daughter named April, which causes friction, leads to the cancellation of their engagement, and results in Lorelai spending a night with Christopher.

Starting us into the less-than-stellar seventh season of “Gilmore Girls.” The decline in the show’s charm can be attributed to the departure of Amy Sherman-Palladino, the series creator and showrunner, along with her husband Daniel Palladino who also served as a showrunner. As per the Palladinos, they left due to their request for a brief break and an eighth season to wrap up the story neatly. The scant attention given to Luke and Lorelai in season 7 certainly suggests that the Palladinos were correct in their decision.

Gilmore Girls’ Final Season Failed Luke & Lorelai’s Story After Years Of Build-Up

She Spends Half The Season With Christopher

In the later episodes of Gilmore Girls, it often becomes annoying when a character takes a disastrous action that causes significant problems throughout the next few seasons. An instance like this is Rory’s decision to steal a yacht, leave Yale, and have a falling out with Lorelai, but it doesn’t even come close to the repercussions caused by Lorelai’s actions. Specifically, after her engagement to Luke falls apart, she seeks comfort in Christopher’s arms, then not only begins dating him but also marries him in season 7.

It’s understandable that Lorelai tends to avoid confronting her issues head-on, which explains her actions during the season 6 finale. However, what left many viewers puzzled was that for most of Gilmore Girls season 7, Lorelai seemed to be spending a significant amount of time with Christopher – a character not widely appreciated by fans unless you’re Emily Gilmore. I could have accepted if they had given dating a try over several episodes, but the relationship between Lorelai and Christopher wasn’t one that fans had grown attached to over seven seasons.

In the final season of Gilmore Girls, the writers placed far too many expectations on Christopher at the expense of Luke and Lorelai. The series should have focused more on Luke and Lorelai reconciling, as their reunion and subsequent kiss felt less fulfilling due to a lack of attention given in the finale. A better resolution could have been achieved if the final season had devoted more time to their storyline.

Luke & Lorelai Deserved More Attention Before Gilmore Girls’ Original Ending

The April Storyline Took The Spotlight Off Their Relationship

Although many viewers disliked the Lorelai and Christopher storyline in season 6 of Gilmore Girls, it shares the same issue as season 7 when it comes to interrupting Luke and Lorelai’s narrative. The introduction of Luke’s daughter, April Nardini, became a significant distraction from their relationship, and to make matters worse, their poor communication during this time significantly impacted their engagement negatively.

During season 6, Lorelai’s strained relationship with Rory persisted, prolonging their disagreement over Rory’s choice to leave Yale. This dispute led Lorelai to delay her wedding with Luke as she yearned for her daughter’s presence at the ceremony. In essence, Lorelai endured an extended period of unhappiness throughout season 6, as April was introduced in the same episode where Lorelai and Rory reconciled. This development cast a somber tone over the season, particularly for fans of Luke and Lorelai.

A Year In The Life Failed To Fix The Show’s Best Romance Story

It Invented Problems That Luke & Lorelai Wouldn’t Realistically Have

Fans of Gilmore Girls eagerly anticipated the return of their beloved series with the miniseries, A Year in the Life. However, the show fell short in many areas, and one major letdown was the portrayal of Luke and Lorelai’s romance. While it would have been unrealistic for them to be perfect, after barely seeing them happy in season 7, we hoped for a hint of a Happy Ever After (HEA) for this couple. Instead, they seemed to revert to the poor communicators they had been before, which was quite awkward given that they had been living together for nearly a decade.

It’s hard to understand why Luke and Lorelai didn’t talk about marriage and children until “A Year in the Life”, and the revival even seemed to raise the question of whether they truly belonged together. Fortunately, similar to season 7, the beloved Gilmore Girls pair ended up happily married, but the journey felt awkwardly contrived along the way.
