Gianfranco Rosi’s Naples-Set ‘Below the Clouds’ Boarded by Match Factory as First-Look Image Revealed (EXCLUSIVE)

The Match Factory is now working on a new documentary called “Below the Clouds,” which is directed by Gianfranco Rosi, who won the 2016 Berlin Golden Bear for his film “Fire at Sea” and received the 2013 Venice Golden Lion for his film “Sacro GRA.”)

In ‘Below the Clouds’, I find myself back in my hometown Naples, nestled amidst its suburbs, a place that has, for millennia, lived side-by-side with the towering Mount Vesuvius. This region’s history is intricate and often tumultuous, shaped by its complex past, making it a unique blend of challenges from the modern era. As I revisit this city, I can’t help but feel the weight of its rich, layered story unfold before me.

The movie, co-produced by Rosi’s company 21Uno Film together with Stemal Entertainment owned by Donatella Palermo, is currently in the post-production phase after a two-year filming period and is anticipated to make its debut on the film festival circuit soon.

Around Mount Vesuvius lies a vast canvas of history, where events of the past are deeply engraved not just on the surface, but also underground and under the waters of modern Naples and its vicinity. The remains of people – women, children, and men, as well as statues and buried cities, serve as testaments to this rich history,” is an alternative way to express the provided synopsis in a more natural and easy-to-read manner.

Modern and historical existence are barely divided by a few thin layers, and the influence of the past can be seen everywhere: from archaeologists and scholars to tomb robbers, firefighters and students, travelers and sailors, the religious and the uninterested,” this passage points out.

Rosi’s latest production, titled “Notturno,” was recognized in 2021 by being chosen for the competition of the Venice Film Festival. It also earned nominations for the Best Documentary category at Camerimage and the David di Donatello Awards.

Over a span of three years, Rosi filmed “Notturno” near the tumultuous borders of Iraq, Kurdistan, Syria, and Lebanon, using his distinctive approach that combines observation with empathy. This artistic documentary portrays individuals who have been grappling with the devastation caused by war and terror, particularly those affected by ISIS in more recent times.

2024 saw me receiving the esteemed accolade from Camerimage for exceptional work in documentary filmmaking.

The Match Factory is planning to debut sales for the film “Below the Clouds” at Cannes. Their lineup also features Oliver Laxe’s “Sirat” and Kelly Reichardt’s “The Mastermind,” both competing, as well as Akinola Davies Jr.’s “My Father’s Shadow,” which is part of Un Certain Regard.
