Giancarlo Esposito Is Working To Adapt An Absolutely Terrifying Stephen King Story, And My Fingers Are Tightly Crossed For This One

2025 has been an amazing year for Stephen King fans, with six movies and TV shows based on his work released throughout the year. From February’s The Monkey to the upcoming finale of HBO’s IT: Welcome To Derry this Sunday, there’s been a constant stream of new content. And even as this year wraps up, more adaptations are already in development – including a new project being spearheaded by Giancarlo Esposito.

Giancarlo Esposito, known for his role in Breaking Bad, has a connection to Stephen King, having appeared in King’s directorial debut, Maximum Overdrive (1986), and the first episode of the horror series Creepshow, which was based on King’s story “Gray Matter.” Now, Deadline reports he’s developing a film adaptation of “The Dreamers,” a novella from the 2024 collection You Like It Darker – a personal favorite of mine. Esposito says the deal is almost complete, and he’s working with screenwriter Guy Busick, a frequent collaborator, most recently on the 2024 horror film Abigail.

Considered the most frightening story in Stephen King’s latest collection, “The Dreamers” follows a talented transcriptionist who takes a job with an unusual scientist in Castle Rock, Maine. The scientist is researching the world within dreams, and his experiments involve giving subjects a hypnotic drug before they focus on an image of a secluded forest house, which they’re asked to imagine themselves exploring. Initially, the tests cause odd occurrences, but things quickly worsen, descending into a terrifying, Lovecraft-inspired nightmare.

The book contains some truly disturbing images, and I can’t wait to see how they’re visualized in the movie adaptation. This one is a must-see for horror enthusiasts.

Guy Busick co-wrote the movie Abigail and is also known for his work on popular films like Ready or Not, Scream (2022), Scream VI, and Final Destination: Bloodlines. Similar to Giancarlo Esposito, Busick has connections to Stephen King’s work, having been a writer and story editor on the second season of the Hulu series Castle Rock. He’s currently working on Scream 7, scheduled for release in February 2026, and the sequel Ready or Not: Here I Come, coming in April 2026.

Currently, the only Stephen King adaptation slated for release next year is the Carrie series from Mike Flanagan, coming to Amazon Prime Video. However, plans in Hollywood can change fast, so that might not be the whole story. We’ll continue to share updates here on TopMob about new King movies, shows, and limited series, and we’re especially hoping to hear more about The Dreamers soon.
