Ghost Of Yotei Will Ditch Repetition For "Unique Experiences," Devs Say

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for open-world titles, especially those that transport me to immersive historical landscapes, I eagerly anticipate the release of Ghost of Yotei. The fact that it’s a spiritual successor to the captivating Ghost of Tsushima has my heart racing!

Enthusiasts of Ghost of Tsushima received great news in Sony’s recent State of Play event – a new installment titled Ghost of Yotei is under development, introducing a fresh protagonist and a unique setting. Although details about the game are still scarce, the creative team behind Ghost of Yotei assures players that this spiritual successor will avoid the repetitiveness found in the original game.

In a conversation with The New York Times, creative director Jason Connell shared one hurdle they encounter when creating an open-world game: the monotony of repeatedly doing the same tasks. To combat this repetition and offer fresh experiences, they aim to strike a balance.

A significant aspect of these special adventures will allow the player to have greater influence over the decisions made by the protagonist, Atsu, who now embodies the Ghost persona. Although the narrative unfolds in a timeframe centuries after Ghost of Tsushima, it’s Atsu who steps into this role. The player will also be given the choice on how Atsu conducts her battles, whether by employing traditional melee weapons or opting for firearms instead.

Nate Fox, who co-leads the game’s creative direction, expressed his ambition to infuse more peril into Ghost of Yotei, an inspiration drawn from Sucker Punch’s field trips to Shiretoko National Park.

Fox remembered, “Within the park, you’re required to watch a video detailing the risks associated with bears.” The experience of being in this stunningly picturesque park, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and water, while constantly mindful of the presence of dangerous bears, was exhilarating… Our aim is to replicate that sensation of danger within our video game.

Ghost of Yotei doesn’t have a release date, but it will arrive on PlayStation 5 in 2025.
