Ghost of Yotei fan climbs the real Mount Yotei to celebrate the game’s release

The highly anticipated game, Ghost of Tsushima, has been released, and one excited fan celebrated by climbing the real-life Mount Yotei – the mountain that inspired the game’s setting.

Famitsu editor Chemical Yoshino was incredibly excited for the game’s release, so he traveled to Hokkaido and climbed Mount Yotei, the volcano that inspired the game’s title. Often called “Ezo Fuji” because it looks like Mount Fuji, this impressive peak reaches 1,898 meters and is a prominent landmark in western Hokkaido.

So, Yoshino wrote about this whole thing in Famitsu, and apparently it took four days total. We’re talking one night actually *on* the mountain! Each climb up and down was about seven hours, which turned what started as a fun little idea into a real test of how much I could push myself. It was way more intense than I expected!

Lots of people enjoy looking at the volcano from a distance, but Yoshino was determined to climb to the very top before experiencing the version created by Sucker Punch.

The release of *Ghost of Yotei* on October 2nd coincided with a real-world climbing event. This new game is a sequel to the popular 2020 title *Ghost of Tsushima*, but instead of focusing on the Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island, it’s set hundreds of years later in Ezo (now Hokkaido). Mount Yotei is a central location in the game, influencing both the scenery and the emotional tone of the story, which revolves around a character named Atsu and his quest for revenge.

Mount Yotei is a tough climb, even for skilled hikers. It’s known for its steep paths, quickly changing weather, and a lengthy hike that usually takes around half a day to complete.

Because of its perfectly shaped cone, people have often compared this mountain to Mount Fuji, giving it the nickname “Ezo Fuji.” Yoshino’s ascent highlighted how the game’s imaginary world reflects the beauty of a famous landmark in Japan.

Many players will experience Mount Yotei for the first time through the game, but Yoshino actually climbed the mountain in real life before playing. This made his in-game climb a special way to honor another great PlayStation game.
