Ghost of Yotei devs recognized Ghost of Tsushima’s weakest link and got rid of it. They believe that „the beauty of open-world games is in the exploration”

Despite the fact that Ghost of Tsushima, launched by Sucker Punch in 2020, enjoyed great acclaim from both players and reviewers, its creators acknowledge that there were certain areas where the game could have been stronger.

During an interview with Automaton, Directors Nate Fox and Jason Connell candidly acknowledged certain challenges, particularly concerning the game’s pacing and design of supplementary activities.

In Tsushima, there are numerous mini-games, however, it’s unfortunate that certain ones, particularly the one involving following a fox to a concealed shrine, seem to lack diversity and can become tedious or feel like a task rather than an enjoyable experience. This sentiment was shared by players as well, according to Fox.

As a passionate fan, I can confidently say that the creators behind Sucker Punch have learned from their past experiences and are taking steps to ensure a fresh, exciting experience with the upcoming Ghost of Yotei. They’ve emphasized that the variety in minigames will be significantly improved this time around, aiming to eliminate any sense of monotony.

In our design, we’ve crafted an array of surprising results for the mini-games, aiming to exceed the player’s anticipations. We firmly believe that the essence of open-world gaming lies in the journey of exploration, and thus we are committed to providing a wide range of experiences for the players.

As a gamer, I’m excited that Fox and Connell emphasized their aim for creating a game where my actions shape the journey. This implies I’ll have some control over the sequence of main tasks, even though not every objective can be altered. While they promise enhancements in the exploration aspect of “Ghost of Yotei”, the game world size will remain comparable to the initial installment, as suggested by the directors.

Ghost of Yotei will be released on October 2, 2025, exclusively on PlayStation 5.
