As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent traversing open-world landscapes and honing my samurai skills, the news of Ghost of Tsushima‘s sequel has sent a wave of exhilaration coursing through me. I remember the captivating tale of Jin Sakai, the last samurai, and the immersive world of Tsushima that Sucker Punch crafted so meticulously.
2020’s Ghost of Tsushima, created by developer Sucker Punch, has been confirmed to receive a follow-up. This upcoming game, titled Ghost of Yōtei, was unveiled during State of Play on September 24 and is currently being developed for the PS5 with a projected release in 2025.
The trailer mainly emphasizes the game’s striking landscapes and brief instances of combat featuring the new character, Atsu. Atsu appears to share similar skills in swordplay and stealth with Ghost of Tsushima’s protagonist, Jin, yet it also reveals that she wields weapons not previously seen with Jin.
In a recent blog post on PlayStation, Andrew Goldfarb from Sucker Punch revealed that the upcoming game’s protagonist, Atsu, embarks on his adventure in the year 1603, over three centuries after the events of Ghost of Tsushima. The narrative unfolds in the vicinity of Mount Yōtei, a prominent peak located in the region of Ezo – an area known as Hokkaido today. In 1603, this region was independent from Japan and featured vast grasslands, snowy tundras, and hidden perils. Unlike the structured samurai clans of Tsushima, this setting hosts an original tale that Sucker Punch is eager to share with us.
At its debut, Ghost of Tsushima quickly became one of Sony’s most successful new games in terms of sales speed, and as of now, it has sold over 8 million copies worldwide. Given such impressive numbers, it was only a matter of time before a sequel was announced. Earlier this year, a Director’s Cut version of the game made its way to PC platforms, offering extra features for players.
Apart from the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima sequel, a movie based on this franchise is being planned by John Wick director Chad Stahelski. This movie, titled Ghosts of Tsushima, is being developed under the PlayStation Productions label. This division has previously produced films like Uncharted and Gran Turismo, as well as TV series such as Twisted Metal and The Last of Us. In addition to these projects, they are also working on God of War and Horizon television shows, and a film adaptation of Days Gone.
