As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for open-world titles that offer immersive experiences, I can confidently say that the upcoming Star Wars: Outlaws has piqued my interest. While the game’s connection to Assassin’s Creed or Red Dead Redemption 2 is undeniable, it’s the influence of Ghost of Tsushima that truly resonates with me.
In developing Star Wars: Outlaws, the Ubisoft Massive team found Ghost of Tsushima to be a significant influence, rather than relying on inspiration from Assassin’s Creed or Red Dead Redemption 2.
Julian Gerighty, the creative director behind the game, shared with GamesRadar that among all the “Assassins” series, he holds a special fondness for “Odyssey”. During the development of “Outlaws”, he frequently reached out to the team responsible for that title, asking questions about various design aspects like the size of the world and travel duration between locations.
It’s hardly surprising if creators of open-world games draw inspiration from Red Dead Redemption 2. This game has been a benchmark in the industry, often hailed as the best sandbox available to date. Its immersive world serves as an ideal blueprint for competitors when striving to create a vivid, living environment.
Despite this, the samurai game developed by Sucker Punch studio piqued the interest of the developer. As Gerighty described, it embodies the Eastern influences often found in George Lucas’ work, particularly the films of Akira Kurosawa. Notably, the developer emphasizes the “coherent vision” and the careful design of every aspect within GoT to maintain a unified gameplay concept throughout.
In my opinion, what made “Ghost of Tsushima” stand out for me was its focus on preserving a player’s fantasy and fully embracing it. The narrative, setting, characters, and gameplay all cohesively fit together, creating the illusion that you are a samurai-ninja in feudal Japan. This concept served as an inspiration for our approach to [“Star Wars: Outlaws”].
The game titled “Star Wars: Outlaw” has stirred up intense feelings, particularly apprehension after its earlier previews. Despite the recent demo, many viewers are not anticipating it to be a classic, but most critics concur that it will offer plenty of enjoyable experiences, especially for fans of Star Wars.
As a diehard Star Wars fan, I can hardly contain my excitement as I eagerly await the release of “Star Wars: Outlaws” on August 30 for PC, PS5, and XSX/S. Finally, we’ll get to experience Ubisoft’s unique take on this iconic universe and witness how it shapes up!
