Already sparking my curiosity, it has the potential to become your social circle’s next captivating obsession.
Initially conceived as a final project for seniors at the NYU Game Center, Mycopunk has morphed into a dynamic, continually changing entity. A team of seven aspiring game designers are collaborating on this ambitious endeavor, and early signs indicate a promising outcome.
I’ve spent a couple of hours on Mycopunk, and it’s the genuine article. The swift first-person shooter mechanics lead to thrilling multiplayer clashes with distinct enemy traits, all enhanced by intricately designed customization options that let you play in your preferred style. It’s an ambitious project, but one that’s already shaping up nicely.
Is it flawless? Absolutely not. Is any game, though? I must admit there were some challenges at the beginning for me. However, from its charming aesthetics to the frequently hilarious character interactions, Mycopunk has captured my interest right away, and I believe that many other first-person shooter enthusiasts will share this sentiment as well.
What is Mycopunk? Devolver’s new co-op FPS explained
To put it simply, Mycopunk is essentially a cooperative first-person shooter (FPS) with a focus on missions. When you join the game, you’ll find yourself in vast settings where you must accomplish various tasks while battling an array of peculiar and eccentric adversaries.

Absolutely, their appearances can be adjusted as needed, but the real excitement comes from personalizing their equipment, or loadouts. You’ll carry two weapons into battle initially, which may seem commonplace, but with customization, they can transform into something uniquely yours.
Consider an ordinary assault rifle, which packs quite a punch on its own. Imagine if it had an infinite supply of ammunition. That’s possible, but at a cost: keep holding the trigger for prolonged periods, and instead of inflicting harm on enemies, you may end up causing damage to your own character. However, for the right price, this unique feature could be yours.
The starting weapon is a unique shotgun that causes fire damage. To use it effectively, aim it at a solid surface like the ground or a wall before firing, allowing the bullets to ricochet towards your target.

The intricate blend of weapons, gear, skills, and other elements is what truly sets Mycopunk apart. It’s a brilliant sandbox that fully appreciates its immense potential. Instead of discouraging outrageous combinations or guiding players along specific paths, the game essentially invites you to unleash your creativity and craft the most destructive character builds imaginable.
A hint of Destiny, a dash of Helldivers 2, and a whole lot of originality
At first sight, Mycopunk stands out uniquely within the First-Person Shooter (FPS) genre, blending a raw and lively science fiction aesthetic that sets it apart. However, upon closer examination, it draws on proven strategies from established series to ensure its success.
The influence of Destiny is clearly apparent in the gameplay, particularly the shooting mechanics and weapon systems. For instance, the rarity system for weapons, where specific upgrades function like ‘Exotics’ from Bungie’s looter shooter, can significantly alter a gun’s performance. However, it’s the overall sensation of the first-person shooter (FPS) mechanics that most strongly echoes Destiny.
Every bullet has a distinctive quality, a meticulous accuracy, a significant impact, and an innovative flair that no other games within its category can replicate.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my strong desire for a game-changing feature in all future FPS games: the need for integrated projectiles similar to Halo’s legendary Needler. Picture this: instead of the Needler launching its needles separately, they would be attached to your reticle, moving in sync with where you aim. It’s an exhilarating weapon concept and a tiny glimpse into the creative genius that Mycopunk brings to the table.

To clarify, an initial point of comparison has been set, yet this project by a previous student pushes boundaries even more. The upgrade system for weapons that we mentioned previously, it’s not your typical random selection mechanism.
Each weapon comes with its unique layout for placement. Various enhancements, varying in scale and complexity, are available to be added onto this layout. Larger and more powerful enhancements usually have intricate shapes. The process of arranging these enhancements, including power-ups or modifications for weapons, becomes a mini-game, requiring careful positioning. Moreover, some advanced bonuses can also be rotated to add an extra layer of challenge and excitement.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, this game is a testament to some serious thought put into every aspect of the gaming journey. They’ve clearly gone above and beyond to ensure an immersive, engaging experience for us players.

While this sounds promising, it would fall flat if the actions were excessively boring. Fortunately, that’s not something we have to worry about in this situation.
In the spirit of the layout in Helldivers 2, Mycopunk plunges you and your team into expansive landscapes packed with tasks to accomplish and materials to collect. Some resources also offer a distinct level of interactivity; one such resource must first be seized, applied to an enemy, and then eliminated.
The manner in which goals are structured and unfold is strikingly similar to the popular shooter game by Arrowhead. Important elements are dropped by pods from your spaceship as you battle enemies on a distant planet.

When everything comes together, vast spaces and disorderly patterns create opportunities for exceptional skill demonstration. You can perfect complex maneuvers, deal massive damage with intricate weapon combinations, and synchronize abilities with your team during intense battles – it’s quite exhilarating!
Despite the messiness, there are moments when it’s challenging to navigate, especially on my less powerful computer. Sometimes I found it hard to distinguish between living and dead enemies, and even locating the objective was tough at times. However, since the game is still in its early stages, these issues can be overlooked for now.
Plenty of fun to keep your eye on
As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but express my anticipation for the release of Mycopunk. Although there’s no definite timeline yet, it’s already making waves and capturing the attention of the right people. Devolver Digital, a renowned publisher known for hits like Hotline Miami, Inscryption, and Cult of the Lamb, is fully committed to bringing this exciting debut project to light.
It’s evident that they recognize the product’s potential. By refining it a bit more and employing a strategic marketing plan upon release, Mycopunk seems poised to soar through the Steam rankings, potentially becoming the next major success story.
The game offers multiple layers of complexity and tougher levels to maintain player interest for numerous hours. Moreover, it boasts an effortless co-operative lobby system, which guarantees smooth gameplay without any interruptions. When you’re teamed up with your friends, that’s when the real fun begins. Whether you’re hanging out in the spaceship social area or battling on the ground, you won’t encounter a single loading screen again – a feat worth celebrating.
This game’s individual components come together to create a highly engaging and potentially groundbreaking First-Person Shooter (FPS) cycle that has the ability to enthrall players. In my opinion, it’s shaping up to become another successful independent game, especially with the support of Devolver Digital behind it.
