Ranging from police officers partnered with creatures that are part human, part dinosaur for solving crimes, to explorers accompanied by T-Rex friends on their quests for hidden treasures.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my excitement as I share the news that David Sandberg, renowned for his groundbreaking work on the action-comedy short “Kung Fury,” is working on a new feature film. For those of us who adore the vibrant, eccentric spirit of his cult debut – an outrageously over-the-top tribute to the 80s complete with gun-wielding Viking valkyries, a Triceracop character, and a high-kicking Adolf Hitler (or as we fondly remember him, the “Kung Fuhrer”) – this new project doesn’t seem too far removed.
As a film enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming production titled “Dragonlord.” This exciting project promises to be a unique fusion of genres, combining the adrenaline-pumping action sequences of fantasy with the witty humor of punk culture and the futuristic elements of sci-fi.
The movie takes place in a world that Sandberg compares to a fusion of “Star Wars,” “Mad Max,” “Lord of the Rings,” and He-Man, with dinosaurs and future robots living side by side. It seems to be packed with large firearms, massive swords, and an abundance of wild action.
The narrative revolves around a character named Dragonlord, portrayed by Sandberg, who is a treasure-crazed hunter and shares camaraderie with a Tyrannosaurus Rex called Blaze. Unlike Dragonlord, Blaze prefers leisure activities like playing video games. However, his peaceful life is disrupted when the villainous Dreadmancer, similar to He-Man’s arch-nemesis Skeletor, abducts Blaze. In order to rescue his dinosaur companion, Dragonlord assembles a motley crew of extraordinary heroes reminiscent of the Avengers to confront this menace.
According to Sandberg, the world is both entertaining and full of humorous personas. He likens it tonally to “Kung Fury”.
Besides Dreadmancer, the cast of characters in “Dragonlord” also features the Dread Riders, comparable to our world’s Stormtroopers; Quantum Cobra, a tech-savvy individual; Sword Lord, who once served under Dreadmancer but switched sides after falling for his unicorn; Titanus, whose name is often mispronounced as “Tight Anus”; Budgie, a being resembling a man with avian traits that excretes acid; and many more. In terms of creativity and humor, it shares striking similarities with “Kung Fury.
Sandberg describes it as a unique blend of various elements. He can’t think of any movie that mirrors it exactly. However, he suggests imagining a fusion of ‘He-Man’, ‘Star Wars’, ‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘Mad Max’, and ‘Ninja Turtles’. Yet, he emphasizes that despite these similarities, the final product is likely to be quite distinct from anything we’ve seen before.
The filmmaker announced that the “Dragonlord” script is being fine-tuned now, and they plan to start casting soon, with filming scheduled for spring 2026. Unlike the movie “Kung Fury,” which was primarily filmed using a green screen, “Dragonlord” will be made using advanced virtual production technologies. The filmmaker believes these technologies offer him far superior tools for creating worlds compared to what he had before, and despite the grand scale of the project, he expects the budget to remain around $20 million.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to be part of the “Dragonlord” venture, a project that’s being generously backed by Mikko Kodisoja, the Finnish entrepreneur who co-founded Supercell, the gaming company behind the global phenomenon “Clash of Clans.” We’ve struck up an engaging conversation centered around our shared vision of crafting fresh, exhilarating high-concept ideas for movies. The “Dragonlord” is the first of many projects we’re bringing to life. Currently, I’m diligently working on this film at Mikko’s innovative virtual production facility in Finland.
Approximately a decade has passed since “Kung Fury” debuted at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, and now news arrives that “Dragonlord,” another production by the same director (Sandberg), is almost ready for release. After its initial premiere, a full-length sequel was announced with Sandberg once again at the helm. Over the subsequent years, big names like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Fassbender joined the cast. However, despite filming wrapping up in late 2019, post-production was halted in 2020 due to legal complications surrounding the Chinese financier of the film. As we stand five years later, these legal issues persist, leaving “Dragonlord” in a state of uncertainty (although a leaked 10-minute preview sparked quite a buzz online).
In a recent conversation with EbMaster, Sandberg expressed his deep sadness over the prolonged delay of his cherished project, which had plunged him into a serious depression. However, this setback eventually motivated him to create anew, leading to the production of “Dragonlord”. Thanks to Kodisoja’s full funding for the feature film, Sandberg is now free from the need to seek additional financiers or worry about pre-sales. His plan is to complete the movie and then present it to potential distributors.
Indeed, there remains optimism that the legal issues preventing “Kung Fury” from being released can eventually be resolved, and judging by the response to the leaked preview, there’s clearly a lot of enthusiasm for it. However, until that happens, director Sandberg has another wild world, complete with an avian character that excretes acid, to keep him occupied in the meantime.
