Gerard Depardieu Found Guilty on Sexual Assault Charges, Given 18-Month Suspended Prison Sentence

Actor Gerard Depardieu, who is French, was found guilty by a Paris court for committing sexual assault on two different women, and was sentenced to spend 18 months in prison.

The judgment originated from sexual assault allegations made by two women, a set decorator and an assistant director, who were part of the “The Green Shutters” production team in 2021. During a four-day trial, the prosecutor proposed an 18-month suspended sentence for Depardieu, as he denied all accusations. Additionally, the prosecutors asked the court to impose a fine on the actor, require him to undergo psychological treatment, and register him in the sex offenders registry.

The assistant director alleged in a complaint that Depardieu had inappropriately grabbed her behind on the street and later touched her breasts at the filming location, as well as another instance of him touching her behind. However, Depardieu claimed to have only accidentally brushed against her with his back in a hallway, but denied intentionally touching her behind, according to Le Monde’s report.

The decorator has claimed that Depardieu inappropriately touched and verbally harassed her during filming by making lewd remarks. She claims that on one occasion, as she passed him sitting in a hallway, he grabbed her, moved her towards him, positioned himself with his legs to prevent her from leaving, and rubbed her waist, hips, and chest while making explicit comments. However, Depardieu offers a contrasting account of the incident. He states that he only grabbed her hips to prevent slipping.

Since December 16, 2020, the well-known French actor is facing charges related to rape and sexual assault accusations made by actress Charlotte Arnould in 2018, within a different legal case.

In August, the Paris prosecutor’s office demanded that Gérard Depardieu face trial for charges of digital rape and sexual assault, which were claimed to have taken place on the 7th and 13th of August, 2018. The judge now needs to determine how to proceed with the case. Depardieu, who has stirred a significant moment in the French #MeToo movement, was also accused by thirteen women of inappropriate sexual behavior in an April 2023 report published by the French investigative news site Médiapart.

Despite the ongoing accusations and verdict against actor Gerard Depardieu, he was still given a role by Fanny Ardant – a renowned French actress-cum-filmmaker who publicly supported him during his trial. Ardant’s movie, titled “She Saw Without Seeing Anything Else,” started filming in Portugal last month.
