Gerard Depardieu Faces 18-Month Suspended Prison Sentence at Sexual Assault Trial

Actor Gerard Depardieu, originally from France, was given a 18-month suspended jail term due to accusations of sexual misconduct involving two female colleagues during the production of “The Green Shutters” in the year 2021.

Following a three-day trial where he refuted all allegations, French prosecutors proposed a suspended jail term, a fine of €20,000, mandatory psychological evaluation, and inclusion in the sex offender registry as their verdict for Depardieu.

Depardieu, often recognized as a significant figure in French cinematic history with more than 150 films under his belt, including notable works like Jean-Paul Rappeneau’s “Cyrano de Bergerac, has been implicated by a set decorator and an assistant director during the filming of “The Green Shutters.

Since December 16, 2020, the well-known French actor has faced charges related to rape and sexual assault accusations made by actress Charlotte Arnould in 2018. These charges are a separate case from any others.

In August, the Paris prosecutor’s office submitted a final indictment asking that Gérard Depardieu face trial at the departmental criminal court for charges of rape by digital penetration and sexual assault, which are alleged to have taken place on August 7 and 13, 2018. The judge now needs to determine the course of action for this case. Depardieu, who has been a significant figure in France’s #MeToo movement, has also faced accusations of sexually inappropriate behavior from 13 women, as reported by French investigative news website Médiapart in April 2023.
