Well now, as someone who’s been through their fair share of Coopers’ Thanksgiving chaos, let me tell ya, this one took the cake! Georgie and Mandy finally managed to wrangle everyone back together for a family dinner, but not without a few bumps along the way.
After five episodes, the main cast of Young Sheldon has reunited, with just two characters absent. However, the Thanksgiving episode set during Georgie and Mandy’s first marriage (Episode 5) is not devoid of conflict.
Progress may be slow, yet Georgie, Mandy, Jim, and Audrey seem to be moving towards a harmonious coexistence. After a turbulent start spanning the initial four episodes of the novel television series, could tranquility be just around the corner?
With the McAllisters’ drama gradually subsiding, it’s now the Coopers’ turn to step into the limelight. So far, we haven’t had a chance to gather the entire Cooper clan together, but Thanksgiving looks poised to bring everyone under one roof for the first time.
However, that doesn’t mean everyone wants to celebrate willingly. Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Episode 5 is a test for both Georgie and Mary in different ways. Warning: spoilers ahead!
Mary is in too deep in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Episode 5
One evening as Georgie and Mandy are resting in bed, Georgie shares an idea with his wife. Since it’s the first Thanksgiving since George’s passing, he suggests they celebrate it with his mother and family. Mandy consents but advises him to discuss this plan with Audrey to avoid any potential upset.
As far as Thanksgiving goes, Audrey’s on the same page with us: we’re spending it with Mary. Georgie seemed to think I’d be furious about it, but he stirred up trouble when he said that – nearly sparking an argument before Jim swooped in and dragged him off to work.
Georgie pops by Medford’s Baptist Church to share their plans with Mary, but she mentions she won’t be participating this year. Sheldon is staying in California, and Missy has requested to spend time with her friends instead. Though Georgie tries to assert his authority, Mary asserts that Missy has already been given permission to do so.
As a fellow enthusiast, I find myself resonating with Mary’s sentiments this year. She feels it’s too much to bear the joy of celebrations, choosing instead to prioritize her feelings and step away from festivities completely. This revelation hits me hard, as Georgie, because I too am grappling with my own grief in a manner that seems insufficient.
The McAllisters make Thanksgiving happen
In the fifth episode of “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” Georgie isn’t passively accepting his decision. Instead, he persists in attempting to persuade Missy to join the family celebration, but unfortunately, it doesn’t work out. Later, she ends up hanging up on both Georgie and Mandy.
Mandy notices how heavily this situation affects Georgie, so she brings him his favorite meal of pecan pie during work hours. At the moment, Georgie is out on a tow truck job, but Jim and Mandy discuss George. Jim expresses his anticipation of sharing numerous Thanksgivings with George, which causes Mandy to worry about Jim’s well-being as well.
Eventually, Mandy decides to visit Meemaw and Dale with the intention of persuading them to back Georgie. Although they had planned a camping trip, Meemaw expresses reluctance about going, while Dale seems unhappy (as usual). Pretending to be concerned for her grandson, she consents to their visit.
After that, I reached out to Missy again, hoping to make it work this time around, but with a twist – I proposed altering my schedule for her, but under certain conditions. To my surprise, she suggested we swap favors; she wanted me to accompany her to get a tattoo in return for her time. I respectfully declined that offer. In the next scene, Missy is seen sitting in the tattoo artist’s chair, getting a dolphin inked on her inner calf – all without my assistance.
Mandy informs Georgie that he can bring his family over for the holidays, causing Georgie’s face to brighten. However, when Georgie learns that Mary won’t be invited, his heart feels heavy. True to their word, Meemaw, Dale, and Missy attend on the day. Later, when Georgie inquires from Mandy and Missy about the change, they merely say Mandy made her request in a very polite manner.
Before everyone begins their meal, there’s a sound at the door – it’s Mary arriving. After they settle down for dinner, Meemaw shares her gratitude with Mary for assisting her son in coping with the day. Nevertheless, Jim seems to be displaying habits similar to those of George; for instance, consuming an excessive amount of beer.
George brings the Coopers back together
This situation triggers a heated disagreement between Audrey and Jim in the kitchen, causing Mary to become distraught enough to depart. In pursuit of Mary, Georgie encounters her and learns that she feels she’ll never have arguments like that with George again. As Mary prepares to leave, Georgie proposes an idea he believes is even more effective.
In a more conversational tone: At George’s gravesite for the remainder of the day, Mary, George, and Missy indulge in pie. Comforted by the presence of her entire family, Mary finds peace. On the other hand, Missy finds the situation a bit unsettling. As Missy’s sock slips off, her tattoo becomes visible to Mary, causing her to become quite agitated.
At home, Mandy, Audrey, and Meemaw find themselves as the audience for Connor and Dale’s musical duet played on the guitar and accordion. As for Jim, he’s currently unconscious.
