George R.R. Martin’s Blog Was Briefly a House of the Dragging

As a devoted fan who has spent countless hours immersed in George R.R. Martin’s intricate world of Westeros, I find myself torn between my admiration for the show and my respect for the author’s original vision. It’s like watching your favorite team make a questionable trade – you can see the logic behind it, but it still hurts to see a beloved character or plot line disappear.

Spoilers for the second (and possibly third?) season of House of the Dragon follow.

On September 4, George R.R. Martin, the author, initially objected to certain alterations in HBO’s House of Dragon, particularly the exclusion of a crucial character named Maelor from his book Fire & Blood. In a detailed post, Martin pointed out that the omission of Maelor resulted in the loss of a powerful scene where Helaena was forced to pick one of her sons to eliminate, which would have added more depth and complexity to the series. Martin hinted that the showrunner Ryan Condal made these decisions for budgetary reasons and to ease production scheduling, as he put it, “But simpler is not better.” According to Martin, Maelor’s introduction was first planned to be delayed until season three, but the plan now is for him never to appear at all. Martin expressed concern that this omission could have a domino effect on other aspects of the storyline, such as the Blood and Cheese sequence, the Bitterbridge scene, and Helaena’s suicide. He argued that these elements are significant because they serve to link the storylines together in a coherent manner. In essence, Martin was saying that while not all of it may be essential, it all adds value to the narrative

Previously, in December 2023, Martin shared on his blog about engaging in enjoyable conversations regarding seasons three and four of “House of the Dragon” with Condal and fellow writers. However, it appears there might be a disconnect between Martin’s expectations and HBO’s plans – the author’s post ended with a warning that potential problems loom if House of the Dragon proceeds with modifications currently under consideration for seasons three and four, hinting at larger and more harmful issues to come

The creative team behind House of the Dragon, who are ardent admirers of George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, find it no less than exceptional, according to an HBO representative’s statement made on September 4 to Vulture. Adapting a book for screenplay often necessitates tough decisions regarding characters and plots that the viewers will follow. However, Ryan Condal and his team have demonstrated exceptional skill in this task, and the massive fanbase amassed by the series across its first two seasons will undoubtedly continue to appreciate it

On the bright side of all this drama, we should note that Martin previously promised in a July 5 post, “Somewhere down the line, I will do a separate post about all the issues raised by Blood and Cheese… and Maelor the Missing. There’s a lot to say.” Just under two months later, he followed through on that promise. So it is possible! Look, after years of waiting, we’ll take any optimistic sign that The Winds of Winter is on its way, alright?
