As a devoted admirer of George R.R. Martin‘s extraordinary body of work and his unparalleled knack for weaving captivating tales, I find myself eagerly anticipating the premiere of “The Ugly Chickens” at the Hollyshorts Film Festival. The fact that this short film is based on a Nebula Award-winning story by Martin’s late friend Howard Waldrop, and is part of a series of adaptations of Waldrop’s work, underscores the profound connection between these two masters of science fiction.
“George R.R. Martin’s short film titled ‘The Ugly Chickens’ is scheduled for its debut at the Hollyshorts Film Festival.”
Featuring Felicia Day, who’s known for her role in “Supernatural,” the short movie is inspired by Howard Waldrop’s acclaimed story that won a Nebula Award. Science fiction writer Waldrop was a close friend of Martin’s and passed away in 2024. Martin intends to transform additional three of Waldrop’s short stories into movies.
I was privy to the preliminary version of “The Ugly Chickens” that Howard watched before his passing. His approval of it brings me immense joy. If only we could have shown him the completed film.
In this short film, actresses Jennifer Dale (from “Coroner”), Natalie Charles (“Suits”), and Mag Ruffman (“Alias Grace”) are among the stars. The production took place on-site in Toronto.
Intrigued by the intriguing rumor of the dodos’ survival, I, an avid ornithologist named Paula Linberl, embarked on an exciting nationwide journey to solve this captivating enigma.
Mark Raso (“Copenhagen”) directs from a screenplay by Michael Cassutt (“Twilight Zone”).
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to be part of the production team for Fidelio Films, working alongside Martin’s esteemed company KVK. In this creative venture, I collaborate with producers Elias Gallegos and Lenore Gallegos, as well as the talented duo Mauro Mueller and Philippe Woodtli. Together, we strive to bring captivating stories to life on the silver screen.
Salaud Morisset are repping international sales.
“The Ugly Chickens” will premiere at the festival’s opening night on Aug. 8.
Recently, Martin has found himself quite occupied. Apart from refining Waldrop’s shorts and developing his own version of “Fire & Blood,” which has been released as “House of the Dragon” with Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy in leading roles, he is also expected to complete the long-awaited series of “A Song of Fire and Ice.”
