George R.R. Martin Reaffirms Plans For More Dunk & Egg Sequels Amid A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Debut

George R.R. Martin wants to provide HBO with more material to adapt for television, following the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – featuring the characters Dunk and Egg – next week.

Before the premiere of the new Game of Thrones prequel, The Hedge Knight, author George R.R. Martin revealed on the official HBO Max companion podcast, hosted by Jason Concepcion and Greta Johnsen, that he intends to write more stories in his Tales of Dunk and Egg series.

George R.R. Martin first introduced Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, in the novella The Hedge Knight, which was published in 1998. He continued their story with two more novellas, The Sworn Sword (2003) and The Mystery Knight (2010). Since then, Martin has expressed interest in writing further adventures for the pair, but hasn’t shared many details about when those might appear, especially with HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adaptation now in development.

So, good news for fans of the Dunk and Egg novellas! George R.R. Martin recently shared his plans for future stories, and it sounds like he’s definitely got more adventures in mind for those two after The Mystery Knight. The renewal of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 really reinforces this. However, and this is the big ‘but’, it all comes down to time. Martin says the biggest hurdle isn’t coming up with ideas, it’s actually finding the time to sit down and write them. It’s a frustrating situation, because we know there’s more story there, but it hinges on his schedule.

You know, if I ever get a chance, I’d really love to revisit the world of Dunk and Egg. There are so many more stories I want to explore about their adventures and what their future holds – I’m really invested in seeing where their journey takes them.

In a 2015 post on his blog, Not A Blog, George R.R. Martin shared that he originally considered calling the fourth Tales of Dunk and Egg novella The She-Wolves of Winterfell. He envisioned the story taking his characters, Dunk and Egg, to Winterfell, the home of House Stark. Martin also mentioned plans for multiple future Tales of Dunk and Egg stories, covering a long period of time, including titles like The Village Hero, The Sellsword, The Champion, The Kingsguard, and The Lord Commander, with several other stories planned as well.

Dunk & Egg Novellas Publication Year
The Hedge Knight 1998
The Sworn Sword 2003
The Mystery Knight 2010

Beyond the upcoming fourth Dunk and Egg story, George R.R. Martin has several other previously announced Game of Thronesrelated books he’s been working on for years. These include the highly anticipated sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter, and the planned final book, A Dream of Spring. He’s also continuing his Targaryen history with a second volume of Fire & Blood*.

George R.R. Martin has several other Game of Thrones projects in the works besides books. He recently confirmed he’s helping to create five or six different sequel or prequel series for television, with most of them being prequels.

As a huge fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I’m thrilled to hear there are even more potential shows in the works! It sounds like these new projects are separate from the ones we already knew about. We’re getting season two of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and House of the Dragon is officially coming back for a fourth season after its third one drops this summer. Plus, HBO is reportedly developing several other spinoffs – Aegon’s Conquest, The Sea Snake, The Golden Empire, and 10,000 Ships – which is amazing news for anyone who wants to spend more time in Westeros!

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 premieres on HBO on Sunday, January 18.
