George R.R. Martin just made another sly dig at House of the Dragon & Game of Thrones

George R.R. Martin has not been shy about expressing his thoughts regarding ‘House of the Dragon‘, and he’s taken another jab at the GoT prequel series in his latest statement.

In September 2024, Martin shared an extensive blog entry offering his thoughts on House of the Dragon Season 2. More precisely, he discussed their portrayal of “Blood and Cheese” and Ryan Condal’s future plans for the show.

After he removed it, HBO issued a commendation for Condal’s contributions to the series, acknowledging that challenging decisions were necessary regarding “the characters and storylines” that viewers would continue to follow.

Martin has a clear preference: He dislikes alterations made to his narratives, and encounters challenges when screenwriters strive to transform his literary works into movie scripts.

George R.R. Martin slams Hollywood writers making stories their own

Martin discussed the difficulties he encounters when collaborating with scriptwriters, during his chat with Joe Abercrombie – a man currently adapting his book ‘The Devils’ alongside James Cameron.

In essence, creating television shows or films is a team effort; there’s the director, the cast members, and studio executives who provide feedback in the form of suggestions. You need to work with all these individuals.

Collaboration can be challenging, not primarily due to others, but rather because of the other contributors working on your project. For instance, when they adapt your book or story, they often bring in another writer to rework it. This can feel disconcerting when they want to transform a classic like The Great Gatsby into something new and personal. It’s important to me that the essence of The Great Gatsby remains untouched.

Martin conceded that his perspective might not be widely shared, but often when a Hollywood screenwriter reworks someone else’s work, it doesn’t enhance it. He further stated that more frequently than not, the outcome is actually worsened.

It’s tough not to perceive this as a subtle critique aimed at Ryan Condal and the House of the Dragon crew. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in March, Condal stated that he hadn’t read Martin’s post himself, but he had heard rumors about it.

He found it disheartening to express this, having been an admirer of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ for nearly a quarter-century. Working on the series was not just a remarkable opportunity within his professional journey as a writer, but also a fulfillment of a lifelong dream as an enthusiast of science fiction and fantasy.

I’ve consistently strived to involve George in the adapting phase. I truly have, for many years. And I believed our partnership was both rewarding and robust, as it seemed to be.

As our journey progressed further, it seemed he was reluctant to address the real-world challenges in a balanced manner – something that, as a passionate fan and creator myself, I must navigate simultaneously by wearing both my pragmatic producer’s cap and my creative writer’s hat infatuated with the material.

In simpler terms, “I need to keep pushing ahead with both the writing and practical aspects of this project for the benefit of the team, actors, and HBO since that’s my responsibility. I can only wish that George and I will find our rhythm again someday. That’s all I have to say about it.

For now, let’s discover the latest updates on House of the Dragon Season 3 and other upcoming shows in 2025, as outlined in our television schedule.
