George Lazenby Retires: Actor Who Played James Bond in One Film Is Done With Acting

I’ve had an incredible journey as a actor, one that took me from humble beginnings as an auto mechanic to gracing the silver screen as the second James Bond, George Lazenby. It’s hard to believe that it was over five decades ago when I starred in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” but time waits for no one.

George Lazenby, the Australian actor who portrayed James Bond for a single appearance in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” (1969), has announced his retirement from acting. With a career span limited to that one iconic role, Lazenby is recognized as having the briefest stint among all actors who have donned the tuxedo and assumed the title of the globally renowned secret agent.

In 2017, a Hulu documentary titled “Becoming Bond,” produced by Josh Greenbaum about Lazenby’s life, was made available. Lazenby, an auto mechanic turned male model, became the second actor to portray James Bond in films, succeeding Sean Connery who featured in seven Bond movies.

On July 24th, Lazenby shared on X that he had decided to retire. He described his career as an enjoyable journey, but expressed that growing older was not something he looked forward to.

“Although this was a difficult choice to make, I feel it’s now appropriate to share that I am retiring from my career. Consequently, you won’t find me acting in films anymore, gracing public events, participating in interviews or signing autographs effective from today onwards.”

Making this announcement isn’t simple, yet it’s necessary for me to share that I’m retiring from my professional career effective today. Consequently, you won’t observe me acting anymore, appearing in public, granting interviews or signing autographs. The journey has been an enjoyable experience, but aging brings about new realities.

In my own words, I’m deeply grateful to Anders Frejdh, both my manager and dear friend, who has been an invaluable source of assistance since 2013. His guidance and support have made me the best-represented actor I’ve ever been. Now, I’m thrilled to devote more time to my cherished family. Heartfelt thanks to all of you for the unwavering love and encouragement throughout the years. Your kindness has truly touched me. Sincerely, George xx.

Lazenby acted in several films, such as “The Man from Hong Kong” released in 1975 and “Never Too Young to Die” from 1986.
