Most people agree that Batman & Robin isn’t a fan favorite – in fact, it’s often heavily criticized. George Clooney has acknowledged this over the years, frequently joking about and even apologizing for his portrayal of Bruce Wayne, like when he teased an interviewer about the 1997 film recently. However, Clooney now sees some value in the movie thanks to a sweet experience he had with his son.
George Clooney recently discussed his Golden Globe-nominated film, Jay Kelly, which premiered on Netflix in November. During an interview with W Magazine, the conversation shifted to his role in Batman & Robin, where he acted with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Uma Thurman, Chris O’Donnell, and Alicia Silverstone. When asked if his eight-year-old twins, who are just starting to realize he’s famous, enjoy Halloween, Clooney responded:
Halloween is a really popular holiday in our family. This year, my son dressed up as Batman, which was funny because he hadn’t actually seen the Batman movie yet! I always joke with him that I was Batman, and he always insists I’m wrong. Looking back, I realize it was kind of a big deal when he told me I wasn’t! I finally got around to showing him the movie a few weeks ago. It’s not the best film for adults, but it was perfect for an eight-year-old, and he absolutely loved it.
It’s a sweet story, but funny when you recall George Clooney’s son didn’t like his dad as Batman just a couple of years ago! People change their minds, and Clooney points out that Batman & Robin is probably more fun for kids – it’s basically a really long toy commercial. Still, it’s likely his son will have a different favorite Batman when he’s older, maybe Christian Bale or Robert Pattinson.
George Clooney’s uncomfortable Batman suit might have been a pain, but it ultimately contributed to something positive. Although Batman & Robin was a critical failure and ended the original film series, it paved the way for Christopher Nolan’s successful Dark Knight trilogy. Clooney also got a bit of redemption with the character thanks to The Flash, where he made a cameo as Bruce Wayne after Ezra Miller’s character altered the timeline.
Want to watch Batman & Robin again? It’s available on HBO Max. And looking ahead, George Clooney is set to return as Danny Ocean in Ocean’s 14, though we don’t have a release date yet. Plus, Robert Pattinson will be back as Batman in The Batman: Part II, which is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
