On April 1st, there’s much reason to rejoice at “General Hospital”! This iconic daytime soap opera is marking its 62nd anniversary, celebrating both the show and the fictional building itself. Additionally, they are unveiling the Dr. Monica Quartermaine Cardiac Wing on this special occasion. Despite the passing of Leslie Charleson, who played Monica since 1977 (she passed away in January), her character’s medical legacy will be acknowledged during the upcoming episode on Tuesday. The show will address her demise at a later point.
Frank Valentini, the executive producer, hints at more recognition for Monica in the future. He explains that they seized the chance to align the anniversary of the hospital with the show’s anniversary, making it somewhat self-referential but exciting. To provide a reason for the hospital to celebrate, they devised the concept of a new wing dedicated to Monica, which is not only fitting but also stunningly beautiful, according to him. It’s quite impressive indeed.
The space he mentions is described as an “open-air” courtyard, which Valentini finds creates a unique blend of indoor and outdoor ambiance for the show. He aims to continue this concept throughout the summer months. “I’m constantly trying to find ways to push the boundaries for our production designers, making them think about how we can open up the space or bring us closer to the outdoors,” he says. “That’s why Sonny’s house and the Quartermaine solarium were designed, as they have expansive exteriors.
During the episode airing on April 1st, there’s a subtle tribute to the significant relationships in Port Charles – such as Sonny (Maurice Benard) and Laura (Genie Francis)’s bond – as demonstrated in the clip provided below. This show of affection extends to all who have passed through the hospital, whether as employees or patients, leaving behind cherished memories. Many of these individuals are honored on a memorial wall located in the newly constructed wing.
Valentini emphasizes the significance of recognizing and paying tribute to characters, such as Monica (Charleson), Alan (Stuart Damon), Bobbie (Jackie Zeman), Epiphany (Sonya Eddy) among others. He explains, “While we’re eager to venture bravely into the future, I believe it’s crucial to remember our past and learn from its lessons.” He continues, “The past has shown us that the hospital setting offers a rich ground for storytelling, and the lives and stakes within the hospital are far greater. Therefore, introducing something fresh while also paying homage to those who have been part of this journey makes it feel complete.
