Gearbox says Borderlands 4’s did not change its date because of GTA 6

As a dedicated fan, I was taken aback when Gearbox Studios, the masterminds behind Borderlands 4, unveiled that Grand Theft Auto 6 wasn’t connected to yesterday’s revised release date announcement. To my surprise, the launch date for Borderlands 4 has been moved up from September 23rd to September 12th, a full two weeks ahead of its original schedule. This unexpected update came hand-in-hand with news about a PlayStation State of Play event centered around the latest Borderlands title. Given that Gearbox, the creators of Borderlands, is part of 2K, which in turn is owned by Take Two, the same company that owns Grand Theft Auto 6, some fans, including myself, couldn’t help but speculate about the reasons behind this date change.

Gearbox says moving Borderlands 4 release date has nothing to do with GTA 6

As a passionate fan, I’m excited to share some insight from Gearbox Software’s CEO Randy Pitchford regarding Borderlands 4. In a recent social media post, he clarified that the game’s early release is purely based on their confidence in the game’s development progress. He emphasized this by stating that the decision was not influenced by any other product’s launch date, including (though unmentioned) Grand Theft Auto 6, which seems to be one of the “products” he had in mind. With Bungie’s Marathon also announcing a release date for September 23rd, this timing theory has been floating around too.

Numerous developers have expressed a desire to sidestep the release date of Grand Theft Auto 6, as it’s undeniably the most eagerly awaited game launch. It’s not hard to picture it eclipsing everything else in its path, as we’ve already witnessed with the recent unveiling of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered last week. Initially, indie RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 seemed overshadowed, but it has managed to find its niche audience. On the other hand, smaller indie games haven’t enjoyed the same success.

It’s clear that Borderlands 4 is among the most anticipated releases this year, but it wouldn’t surprise anyone if it were postponed for Grand Theft Auto 6, given they are both owned by Take Two. Although they cater to distinct gaming styles, from a business perspective, it makes sense to provide ample time for players to explore Borderlands 4 before diving into Grand Theft Auto 6. This way, Take Two ensures that each game has its moment in the spotlight and allows players enough time to enjoy both.

As a die-hard fan, I’d say it wouldn’t shock me if Rockstar decided to reveal the release date for Grand Theft Auto 6 only after Borderlands 4 drops. With GTA6 on the horizon, it’s not hard to imagine that many gamers would opt to hold onto their cash, eagerly waiting for the release of GTA6 instead of investing in Borderlands now. Of course, I’m looking forward to playing Borderlands 4, and there’s no doubt it will be an amazing game. But let’s face it, the hype surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 is unparalleled.
