‘Garfield’ rescued after cat survives being hit by train on railroad tracks

A tabby cat named Garfield is becoming famous online after miraculously surviving a train collision and being saved from the railroad tracks. His recovery is being called dramatic.

I heard this crazy story! A train engineer was near Lindenhurst station on Saturday night and spotted a cat lying on the train tracks. At first, they thought it wasn’t moving and sadly assumed the worst – that it had passed away.

The engineer returned to the same spot almost a day later and saw the cat had shifted position. He quickly contacted emergency services.

A team including animal expert John DeBacker and MTA police worked quickly to rescue the injured cat. They temporarily cut power to the train tracks for a few minutes, which allowed them to safely get close and catch the cat with a net.

Garfield survives being struck by train

Garfield incredibly survived after being hit by a train, though he was seriously hurt. He broke his nose, fractured a leg, and suffered several hip injuries. Vets are optimistic about his recovery.

Surprisingly, after being rescued, Garfield was described as loving and gentle. According to DeBacker, he didn’t show any signs of aggression and actually looked for affection.

“Garfield is alive because of many people,” DeBacker said on Facebook.

The cat is now at South Shore Feral Care in West Babylon, receiving treatment and being examined by vets.

Garfield’s vet bills have already totaled around $12,000, and the group caring for him is asking for donations or for people to share his incredible survival story.

DeBacker asked that anyone who can afford it consider donating to SSFC or West Babylon Animal Hospital to help with the animal’s ongoing care. She also noted that his story has gained international attention and was recently published overseas.

The story of Garfield’s ordeal has spread rapidly online, and people are amazed he’s still alive. Several individuals have already reached out, hoping to adopt him when he’s healed.

People online are already calling him a survivor, and joking that this proves cats really do have nine lives.

This funny story about Garfield appears shortly after two heartwarming tales of heroic cats became popular online. One story involved a kitten bravely saving its owner from a fire.

In an incredible turn of events, a cat saved its owner from a potential disaster when it alerted him to a fire caused by a malfunctioning NVIDIA RTX 4090 graphics card in his computer.
