Gandalf Joins The Hunt for Gollum

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for epic fantasy tales and a soft spot for the intricate world of Middle-earth, I must say that the news about two new Lord of the Rings films, focusing on none other than the enigmatic Gollum, has me positively giddy with excitement.

Prepare the rabbits as per Smeagol’s preference inside Gollum’s trailer, including any desired herbs. It seems that Gollum will be making his debut in the upcoming “Lord of the Rings” films slated for 2026. For more updates on “The Hunt for Gollum,” stay tuned, as a certain wizard is said to still be in his grey period.

Even more LOTR films, you say?

10th May, 2024: Andy Serkis is directing two upcoming “Lord of the Rings” movies centered around our beloved character Gollum. Previously involved in these projects as producers are Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, as revealed by David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery during an earnings call, according to Variety. At present, Walsh and Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, are in the process of writing the scripts. The forthcoming films will primarily focus on Andy Serkis’ character who famously said, “We is baaaaak, Precious!”, upon the initial announcement. Warner Bros. Discovery had hinted last year that new “Lord of the Rings” movies were in development, promising to bring fresh tales from Middle-earth.

Currently, the working title for the first film goes by “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum“. This isn’t like “Finding Nemo”, where Gollum’s father is on a quest to locate him after being abducted by a dentist. Instead, it seems that this title refers to a search party looking for Gollum himself. It could be possible that this storyline will introduce some dental work for Smeagol, considering how intimidating his original teeth appear. I must admit, I’ve forgotten just how terrifying those chompers were.

Gandalf is building an elite team

On September 2, 2025: Sir Ian McKellen expresses interest in donning the clown makeup in Hobbiton. In an interview with The Big Issue, McKellen hinted at preliminary discussions to reprise his role as Gandalf in “The Hunt for Gollum.” He shared, “My love for The Lord of the Rings series remains undiminished. I’ve recently learned that there will be additional films, and it appears that Gandalf may feature prominently. Fingers crossed that I’ll be back in the role.” McKellen is looking forward to a well-deserved break for the remainder of 2024, but fortunately, production on these new “Gollum” films starts in 2025, making it an ideal timing. Despite a recent mishap involving a fall during a stage performance on the West End, McKellen has no plans to retire. If Gandalf is any indication, such incidents only serve to make him more resilient.
