With luck on my side, I can now experience how Cyberpunk 2077 and Tears of the Kingdom operate on the latest console. However, it appears that an unforeseen problem occurred – a GameStop store made a significant blunder, which has resulted in several consoles being damaged.
A Nintendo Switch 2 launch day that couldn’t have gone worse
An unexpected incident occurred on Staten Island, New York, on June 4th. People waited traditionally until midnight to purchase their new Switch 2 consoles from the store. However, some customers encountered an unwelcome surprise when they discovered that GameStop had attached the receipt to the console’s box itself. Not only was a damaged box inconvenient, but it turned out to be even more problematic. Nintendo had packaged the Switch 2 in a peculiar manner, with the screen facing upwards and shielded merely by some aluminum foil and a thin layer of cardboard, making it vulnerable to damage during transit.
Initially, several posts on X featured distressing images due to screen cracks – unfortunately, it was unclear for some time how long a replacement might take, potentially up to three months. This delay would have been especially frustrating given the anticipation leading up to launch day. Fortunately, despite the lack of many new games at the time, GameStop managed to expedite the exchange process within 24 hours.
In a Reddit post, it was explained why GameStop employees were using staplers instead of tape: The air conditioner in the store wasn’t functioning properly, making the environment hot and humid. Consequently, the tape wouldn’t adhere to the boxes or receipts, causing them to fall off. Due to this predicament, they were instructed to fasten everything with staples instead. This seemingly practical solution may unintentionally lead to job losses.
