Gamers rage against tariffs. Switch 2 pre-order delays in the US drama continue

On a frustrating Friday for Switch 2 enthusiasts in the U.S., they faced some disappointing updates. New tariffs have led to increased prices, and many are now scrambling to find an inflation calculator. In response, Nintendo postponed pre-orders scheduled for April 9th while they reevaluate the situation. Regrettably, shouting “Reduce the price!” during a Treehouse Live stream didn’t bring about any changes. Consequently, it seems like the internet is boiling with anger.

The Internet blames Trump for Switch 2 pre-order delays

The new U.S. tariffs have caused a shift in Nintendo’s plans for the price of the Switch 2. Initially priced at $449.99, this figure did not account for these additional costs. However, Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, stated that earlier tariffs had no impact on the original pricing; now, due to these new tariffs, the situation has been altered, as reported by NPR.

Due to substantial tariffs – 46% on goods from Vietnam, 49% from Cambodia, and 54% from China – Nintendo has temporarily halted US pre-orders as they evaluate the potential cost implications. As these nations significantly contribute to the production of the Switch 2, there’s a possibility that manufacturing costs could rise. Preliminary estimates suggest an increase in price by approximately $50, hence Nintendo’s decision to pause and reconsider their approach.

Although some are labeling Nintendo as greedy, it’s primarily Donald Trump who’s being criticized by a large number of people on social media platform X, with many referring to him as “the most detrimental president in U.S. history”.

Additionally, I’d like to clear up one last point – if you believe that simply manufacturing the Switch 2 in the U.S. is a quick solution, I’m afraid that’s not the case. In fact, it would only increase the console’s price. Labor costs are significantly higher in the U.S., and most of the components are still produced in Asia. Transporting everything over to the U.S. solely for assembly would further escalate the costs.

Beyond this, it’s important to note that the US lacks the same type of manufacturing infrastructure for gaming hardware as China does. Establishing factories or collaborating with existing ones would require significant time and resources. Despite the new tariffs, producing the Switch 2 overseas remains a more cost-effective choice.
