Gamers love older games and favor PCs over consoles. More than 900 million people already play on rigs

Yesterday, the Game Developers Conference unfolded in San Francisco. During one of the sessions, Ben Porter, who heads the analytical firm Newzoo, shared intriguing insights on the present state of the PC gaming industry.

  1. The conclusion from Newzoo’s research is clear – PC gamers mainly play older games.
  2. In 2024, 92% of the time spent by PC gamers was on games that were at least two years old.
  3. Furthermore, really old titles dominate the list. Last year, up to 67% of the time spent by PC gamers playing was on games that were at least 6 years old.

Users on Steam tend to prefer playing newly-released games. In fact, last year, they allocated about 15% of their total gaming hours to games that came out in the year 2024.

It’s worth noting that the market for PC games is on an upward trend. In 2023 alone, there were approximately 873.5 million PC gamers around the globe. By the following year, this figure rose to an impressive 907 million. This means that PCs have become a preferred choice for gaming over consoles, which were used by about 653.1 million individuals last year.

The research utilized comprehensive questionnaires filled out by approximately 73,000 participants, along with information gathered from analyzing more than 10,000 matches.
