Gamers Are Thrilled About New HoI 4's DLC. Gotterdammerung Earns High Ratings and Boosts Game's Popularity

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the release of Hearts of Iron 4’s expansion Götterdämmerung has been quite an eventful experience. The sheer number of players flocking to the game at its peak was reminiscent of a real-life invasion, with a staggering 72,000 simultaneous players on Steam (just shy of historical records, but close enough to make my gaming rig shiver with excitement).

The strategic game Hearts of Iron 4 got its “German” expansion called Götterdämmerung. This adds new features focusing on Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Belgium, enhancing the gameplay. As usual, the original game also received an update along with the release of this DLC (Downloadable Content).

The launch of Götterdämmerung drew in a significant number of gamers, with as many as 72,000 players concurrently engaging in Hearts of Iron 4 (as per SteamDB). Although it didn’t set a new record for the game, it came very close. Moreover, the data from SteamDB indicates that such a peak could happen again, and it seems likely to occur during the weekend.

As a devoted fan, I must share that the expansion has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response from fellow gamers on Steam. With over 500 user reviews, a whopping 86% are thumbs up! Admittedly, there have been some (inevitable) grumbles about the perceived high cost of the DLC in relation to the game’s content provided by Paradox.

Additionally, there are critiques regarding the technical flaws in the DLC. Some users have gone as far as describing it as appearing less like a polished expansion pack and more like an unfinished modification.

Despite some criticisms, this expansion pack for HoI 4 is also highly acclaimed by players as being incredibly content-rich. Fans have particularly enjoyed the revamped “focus” trees, with Austria and Germany’s alternate histories standing out as highlights. The developers shared a lot of details about it before release in a series of detailed posts. Consequently, Götterdämmerung performed exceptionally well at launch compared to many recent Paradox DLC games.

A point of contention that’s bound to arise is how Nazi Germany should be depicted. With the release of the “German” expansion, one might anticipate a resurgence of this debate, but the opinions shared by German YouTuber and historian Stephen Bliemel have added fuel to the fire. He particularly highlighted the more dynamic representation of Heinrich Himmler in comparison to the original game.
