Game Of Thrones Star Kit Harington Discusses What Went Wrong With The Show's Final Season

As a die-hard Game of Thrones fan who’s spent countless nights huddled under my furs, poring over the intricate tapestry of Westeros, I must admit, Kit Harington‘s revelation about the show’s final season has left me with a sense of melancholy that’s as cold and brooding as the North itself.

As a dedicated Game of Thrones fan and an actor who was part of this epic saga, I can’t help but express my thoughts on the final season. Reflecting on the experience, I believe that certain decisions regarding the storyline and execution could have been handled differently. In conversations with GQ, I shared my viewpoint that the overall exhaustion felt by the entire cast undeniably affected the quality of our performances and the final product. Regarding the series finale, some narrative choices didn’t quite resonate as intended.

He expressed that perhaps the issue with the conclusion of “Thrones” was that everyone was so drained, we couldn’t have endured much more. Consequently, some people felt it wrapped up too quickly, and he might concur. However, he’s not certain there was another option. When he looks at photos from that final season, he appears exhausted, depleted. He didn’t have the strength for another season.

As a devoted fan, I must express my thoughts: Everyone has the right to their own perspective. Personally, I believe that as the narrative progressed, certain missteps might have occurred. There were intriguing decisions made, but they seemed to fall short in execution.

Initially, the early seasons of Game of Thrones are cherished by viewers, yet as it approached its end, some felt the series’ quality and delivery weren’t up to par. However, even with these criticisms, the final season of Game of Thrones drew the highest viewership ratings in the show’s history when it concluded in 2019.

George R.R. Martin expressed his desire for HBO to produce additional seasons of Game of Thrones. On the other hand, creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff envisioned concluding the series through a trilogy of full-length movies. However, neither of their ideas came to fruition, and the show ultimately concluded in its current form.

The saga of Game of Thrones moved forward with the premiere of its prequel series, House of the Dragon, which recently concluded its second season. Coming up next in 2025 is another spin-off titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Regrettably, Kit Harington’s planned Jon Snow TV series never took flight.

In a conversation with GQ, Kit Harington shared that HBO approached him about the possibility of a series centered around Jon Snow. At first, he hesitated but found the idea of exploring Jon’s life post-war intriguing. Unfortunately, the project didn’t come to fruition as the creative team couldn’t develop a compelling enough story for it.

He expressed a sense that there were still aspects to express and a narrative yet to be fully told, but within confined parameters. Over the course of two years, we worked on it iteratively without finding anything particularly engaging. In the long run, he felt that continuing to develop it might lead us towards something subpar, which none of us desired.
