‘Game of Thrones’ Star Joe Dempsie, Cathy Tyson, Adam Ali and Lara McDonnell Join Jodie Whittaker in ‘Truckload’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a follower deeply moved by the power of storytelling and the representation of authentic experiences, I am utterly captivated by the upcoming film “Truckload.” The fact that it is based on writer-actress Evie Jones’ real-life experience adds an extraordinary depth and resonance to the narrative.

Joe Dempsie, best known for his roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Adult Material,” heads a fresh influx of actors joining the cast of the award-winning series “Truckload.” This series won the Empower Fund at Cannes 2024.

In this production, Dempsie will be joined by Adam Ali (from “Waterloo Road” and “Little America”), Cathy Tyson (“Boiling Point” and “Criminal Record”), and Lara McDonnell (“Belfast” and “Artemis Fowl”). The goal of this project, led by Jodie Whittaker (known for “Doctor Who” and “Broadchurch”), is to support and elevate female and non-binary directors.

“The movie titled ‘Truckload,’ inspired by writer-actress Evie Jones’s actual experiences, narrates the story of Lizzie (portrayed by Jones). After a life-altering traffic accident, she goes back to Manchester. The film delves into her struggle with recovery and how it affects her relationships.”

The director, Aella Jordan-Edge, along with producers Arpita Ashok and Victoria Emslie, have finalized the cast which includes Carol Starks (from “Save Me” and “Casualty”) and Angharad Bowen (known for “Bandits” and “Smile School”).

Ashok shared: “We’re overjoyed to have collaborated with casting director Verity Naughton in assembling a remarkable cast. Evie plays the lead character Lizzie, and Jodie takes on the role of Lizzie’s mom Sarah. Joe Dempsie adds depth as Lizzie’s brother Tom, while Adam Ali excels as Lizzie’s friend Amir. Cathy Tyson offers a compelling portrayal as Lizzie’s physiotherapist, and Lara McDonnell brings vibrancy as Lizzie’s cousin. This talented group guarantees that ‘Truckload’ is genuine, thought-provoking yet brimming with life and positivity, mirroring Evie’s real-life experiences.”

Jones commented: “Writing turned out to be a therapeutic journey for me, serving as an outlet to express my experiences as a newly disabled individual. My relationships with family, friends, and even myself have undergone dramatic transformations. Yet, I retain the same aspirations and dreams as before. I wanted to ensure that the script didn’t solely concentrate on the physical disability, but rather the inner transformation and acceptance of my character’s new reality.”

Jordan-Edge stated: “When choosing actors for this film, I recognized a fine line we had to tread. We were seeking regional actors who could grasp the authenticity and intricacy of a story based on Evie’s life, but at the same time, we required performers who would let us find humor in it. I am overjoyed about the fantastic cast who have all effortlessly entered into the complex universe that Evie has created.”

The project secured a £10,000 ($12,770) grant, along with in-kind assistance worth approximately £30,000 ($38,305) from HAWK London and Picture Shop, in addition to Tysers insurance brokers joining the initiative.

In their initial venture, Emslie stated that our fund and the triumphant team demonstrated the power of collaborating with the right strategic allies. They proved it’s possible to share untold narratives, capturing the attention of influential and genuine figures who amplify the project’s influence far beyond just the film itself.
