William C. Dietz, a New York Times bestselling author and veteran of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, passed away on March 15th at the age of 80.
Although Dietz wrote many original science fiction novels, he’s best known by fans worldwide for adapting popular video games into books, and for also contributing to the writing of a few games themselves.
The death of William Dietz occurred only eight months before a new edition of his well-known novel, Halo: The Flood, was set to be released. This updated version will be included in Halo: The Master Chief Omnibus, a collection that also features Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund and Halo: First Strike.
Although Dietz is best known for his work on the Halo games, his career included much more. He will be remembered by the many fans who enjoyed his writing, and his family shared that his voice will continue to live on through his books and the impact he had on others, both as a writer and a loving father.
The Gaming Career of William C. Dietz

John Dietz started his career as a video game writer in the late 1990s, initially by writing novels based on the Star Wars: Dark Forces series. His first novel, Star Wars: Dark Forces Soldier for the Empire, was published in 1997.
After writing the initial Star Wars novel, Dietz continued Kyle Katarn’s story – a character who begins as a Stormtrooper, becomes a Rebel, and eventually a Jedi Knight – in two more books: Rebel Agent (1998) and Jedi Knight. However, these Star Wars stories, along with the entire Dark Forces series, are now considered outside of official Star Wars continuity (non-canon).
Following his work on the Star Wars universe, Dietz turned his attention to another popular science fiction world with the 2003 novel Halo: The Flood. This book adapted the video game Halo: Combat Evolved and was only the second novel ever created based on the Halo franchise.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of William C. Dietz. His stories will live on through his books, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him as a writer and a loving family member.
Although The Flood was largely a novelization of Combat Evolved, it significantly broadened the Halo universe and had a lasting impact on the franchise, in several ways, such as:
- Being the first Halo story partially written from the Covenant’s perspective with the Grunt Yayap and the Spec Ops Elite Zuka ‘Zamamee.
- Being the first story to feature UNSC Marine Marvin Mobuto, who is getting his own horror spinoff book, Halo: Parasite’s Wake, in September, depicting his journey on Alpha Halo.
- Being the first story to follow the crew of the UNSC Pillar of Autumn‘s struggle to survive on Alpha Halo without Master Chief, which laid the groundwork for the 2018 arcade game, Halo: Fireteam Raven.
After working on Halo, Dietz continued writing novels based on popular video games, including Hitman: Enemy Within, Starcraft II: Heaven’s Devils, and Mass Effect: Deception.

Beyond his work on Halo, Grant Dietz significantly contributed to the Resistance game series, which was exclusive to PlayStation. He authored the novels Resistance: The Gathering Storm and Resistance: A Hole in the Sky, and helped write Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita.
Before he died, Dietz was saddened by the sharp decline in book reading during the 21st century, but he felt satisfied with his career as a writer. He shared on his website, “I’m grateful for the chances I got and I made the most of them. I have no regrets, and I’ll be happy when my time comes.” He ended by thanking his readers.
