Game Boy Lego Set Is Only $60, Includes Mario & Zelda Cartridges

Following several months of buzz and anticipation, Lego has finally revealed its brick-made replica of the Nintendo Game Boy. This much-awaited Lego Game Boy is up for preorder starting today at the Lego Store, with a release date set for October 1st. It’s not limited to just the Lego store, so expect major retailers to open preorders soon as well. The Lego Game Boy model, consisting of 421 pieces, is remarkably similar in size to the handheld device that swept the globe when it debuted in Japan and North America in 1989. The Lego version of the Game Boy looks fantastic, and it boasts several interactive elements that will undoubtedly remind Nintendo enthusiasts of the golden age of portable gaming.

One of Lego’s series of models intended for adult builders and collectors, the Game Boy construction set, was first announced in January, but we’re now getting our first official glimpse at this eagerly awaited release as part of Lego’s San Diego Comic-Con unveilings. Priced at an affordable $60 and available for preorder currently, the Game Boy is equal in cost with the Super Mario Piranha Plant as the least expensive display model within the Lego Nintendo collection. It will mark the eighth Nintendo-themed kit designed specifically for adults since their partnership began with a replica of the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Lego Nintendo Display Models for Adults

The Lego Game Boy’s interactive functions, like loading cartridges and depicting levels from real games, bring to mind the Lego NES. This 2,646-piece set was launched in August 2020 to mark Lego’s collaboration with Nintendo. It came complete with a functional top-loading console, a Super Mario Bros. cartridge, a wired controller, a CRT TV with a stand, and a side crank that moves Mario through a scrolling level. To this day, five years later, the NES is often considered the most impressive gaming-related Lego set.

Unfortunately, the Lego NES was discontinued and is almost out of stock at most major retailers, except for Amazon. A few months ago, we observed that Amazon had restocked the retired set, but it’s now being sold for $60 more than its original Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). Currently, the Lego NES is priced at $330 (originally $270), and it might sell out soon as the Game Boy is about to be released. These two sets would make a fantastic pair when displayed together.

Hey there, fellow gaming enthusiasts! I’ve got some exciting news to share about the latest additions to my beloved Lego Nintendo collection. The newest member of the family is none other than the 1,972-piece Mario Kart set. It features a massive, buildable Mario and his iconic red kart. This beauty was unveiled in May at the Lego Store for $170 and made its way to major retailers earlier this month. As you anticipate the arrival of your Lego Game Boy, why not get started early by assembling the 540-piece Piranha Plant from Super Mario Bros.? This is currently the only Lego Nintendo display model on offer. Interestingly, many other sets rarely go on sale, but the Piranha Plant stands out as an exception to this rule.
