Game 6, A Unique Baseball Movie Starring Michael Keaton & Robert Downey Jr.

With baseball season starting, it’s the perfect time to enjoy some movies about America’s pastime! While classics like Moneyball, Major League, Bull Durham, The Sandlot, and A League of Their Own are always great, discovering lesser-known baseball films can be a lot of fun too.

It’s fun discovering lesser-known baseball movies like Mr. 3000, Trouble with the Curve, For Love of the Game, and Eephus. About 20 years ago, a really interesting film featuring baseball came out, but it seems to have flown under the radar, even though it had a lot of famous actors.

Game 6 Is A Different Kind Of Baseball Movie

Released initially at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005 and then more widely in March 2006, Game 6 is a relatively obscure film. It earned only about $129,000 in theaters. Although it’s about baseball, the movie offers a unique approach to the sport, so viewers should be prepared for something a little different than a typical baseball film.

Game 6 centers around Nicky Rogan, a playwright hoping his latest production will be a success. But on opening night, Nicky is distracted – he’s more concerned with watching Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, where his favorite Boston Red Sox are competing for their first championship in nearly a century, against the New York Mets.

The story follows Nicky through a difficult day, as he worries about both his play and an important baseball game. These anxieties lead him into trouble, particularly as the game progresses. Knowing the outcome of the game – as many baseball fans do – makes watching the scene even more tense.

The Cast Of Game 6 Is Actually Fantastic

Even though Game 6 was made with a limited budget and didn’t earn much at the box office, it features a fantastic cast. Michael Keaton, in particular, gives a compelling performance as a man slowly losing his grip on reality throughout the night.

Before becoming famous for Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. plays Steven Schwimmer, a theater critic whose review is central to the film’s ending. Ari Graynor delivers a strong performance as Nicky’s daughter, Laurel.

The movie also features a number of talented character actors, but the highlight arrives about two-thirds of the way through. Catherine O’Hara delivers a fantastic performance in a single, memorable scene where she plays Nicky’s wife, consulting with a lawyer about their divorce.

If you’re hoping for a movie primarily about baseball, “Game 6” won’t deliver. However, it’s a captivating, though small-scale, thriller that cleverly incorporates baseball into its story.
