Although he created the weapon and understood it would be dropped twice for maximum damage, he was unaware of how the Coin intended to employ the bombs or that Prim would be deployed into battle. Despite the gruesome nature of his design, Gale took the necessary steps to secure victory in the war. It’s hard to judge him as going too far or being excessively violent when the opposition aimed to slaughter innocent children.

In the intense heat of war, Gale created a lethal weapon, an action that, given the substantial evidence suggesting he deliberately engineered it, can be seen as more than just a wartime decision. Considering Katniss’s involvement in the rebellion, her experiences taking lives in the arena, and her contemplation of hosting the Hunger Games with Capitol children, one might expect she’d empathize with Gale’s rationale for the bombs. While it’s clear that she didn’t need to forgive him or maintain a close relationship, her unwavering refusal to even acknowledge or connect with him after all they experienced together is difficult to comprehend.

Even if the rift between Katniss and Peeta was necessary for the story, fans would have appreciated a glimpse into what happened to him post-series.

Throughout the Hunger Games film series, Gale was a significant character, but The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 leaves his future unexplored. Since we only learn about his later life from Katniss’s point of view, it seems more like an assumption than a confirmation. This means that viewers are left guessing about his career, family, romantic relationships, and how he coped with the trauma he faced. Even a small hint suggesting that Gale remembered Prim or cared for Katniss and her family would have made for a poignant ending, but we are given no such insight.

It’s quite probable that “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” marks the conclusion of Gale’s narrative arc. While he may not have held as prominent a role as Peeta or Katniss, Gale significantly influenced Katniss’s character growth and emerged as a crucial player in the rebellion. In essence, his importance extended beyond merely filling a slot in a romantic triangle.
