How would a typical day for video game tycoon and Valve co-founder Gabe Newell unfold? In an interview with Zalkar Saliev from one of his yachts, Newell shared that he savors the convenience of residing on a boat while still adhering to a fairly consistent work routine.
He mentioned that his daily routine consists of waking up, delving into work, indulging in scuba diving (either once or twice), resuming work, and then wrapping up the day with a workout at the gym. Since he lives aboard a vessel, he spends his leisure time socializing with everyone on board. He works tirelessly for seven days a week, enjoying every moment of it as it doesn’t feel like labor to him. The engaging tasks he gets to accomplish daily are truly exhilarating, according to him. PC Gamer has verified that this interview is authentic, as confirmed by Valve.
According to Newell, the conventional view of retirement is that you stop working at your unenjoyable job and instead pursue what brings joy and amusement. In that regard, he expressed that he has been living a retired lifestyle for some time now.
Newell has mentioned this before, but in essence, he feels that retirement means being able to leave behind a tedious task and instead pursue activities that bring joy and amusement. In a way, he considers himself to have been retired for quite some time already.
Beyond his duties at Valve, Newell established Starfish Neuroscience, a rival neural interface firm to Elon Musk’s Neuralink. Additionally, he’s involved with a company developing an “airborne pathogen detection gadget,” which can identify potential pathogens present in the atmosphere.
He mentioned that he is constantly working, but not in a way that suggests he’s overworked or exhausted. Instead, he finds joy in his work and often finds it hard to fall asleep because he’s enjoying himself so much.
In the early ’80s, Newell decided to leave Harvard and join Microsoft. He eventually left Microsoft as a millionaire along with Mike Harrington, and together they established Valve. Now, Forbes estimates his net worth at an astounding $9.5 billion. Remarkably, even with such colossal wealth, he continues to engage with fans, having personally delivered Steam Decks in 2022.
