It appears that the co-founder of Valve Corporation, Gabe Newell, is rumored to be putting money into a startup developing brain chips, which is preparing for its initial major product release.
Recently, there’s been a buzz about potential news on Half-Life 3. Many enthusiasts might be curious about the recent activities of Gabe Newell, the creator, entrepreneur, and founder of Valve.
Without a doubt, it’s clear that he has been part of the team at Starfish Neurotech, a company dedicated to creating a brain-machine connection technology.
Consider them as “tools” that offer “concurrent engagement of various areas in the brain” and monitor brain functions. Unlike entertainment-focused brain games, these appear to serve primarily medical purposes, like treating conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.
Valve founder’s brain-computer startup is interested in collaborators
As per the announcement on Starfish’s blog, they are working on advanced technologies that offer unprecedented precision in recording and stimulating neural activities, surpassing the capabilities of existing systems.
They described the product as a “tiny, highly energy-efficient custom chip” designed with a focus on “minimizing its size and power consumption while still offering functionality comparable to standard multi-purpose recording devices.
The chip itself is confirmed to have these features:
- Low power: 1.1 mW total power consumption during normal recording
- Physically small: 2 x 4mm (0.3mm pitch BGA)
- Capable of both recording (spikes and LFP) & stimulation (biphasic pulses)
- 32 electrode sites, 16 simultaneous recording channels at 18.75kHz
- 1 current source for stimulating on arbitrary pairs of electrodes
- Onboard impedance monitoring and stim voltage transient measurement
- Digital onboard data processing and spike detection allows the device to operate via low-bandwidth wireless interfaces.
- Fabricated in TSMC 55nm process
The company hasn’t fixed an exact arrival date, but has indicated that the chips are expected to come by the end of 2025. They’re also interested in working with potential partners.
Currently, we’re seeking partners whose work aligns particularly with our technology, specifically in areas like wireless power transfer and communication, or individuals developing personalized neural interfaces,” they mentioned.
