I’ve always been fascinated by Raylan Givens. He reminds me a lot of Jack Reacher – a real loner who does things his own way. What’s cool is he fits right into both classic Westerns and those gritty crime dramas we see so much of today. He’s a gunslinger, plain and simple, and his idea of justice feels like something out of the old West, even though he’s working as a lawman in modern-day Kentucky. It’s like he stepped straight out of the 1800s!

Although Raylan feels like a character from an older time, Justified’s action is incredibly quick and intense, ranking among the best on TV today. While Yellowstone focuses on a raw, harsh realism and Reacher relies on pure strength, Justified thrives on a feeling of constant tension – a key ingredient for a successful modern Western.

While Raylan Givens embodies the classic antihero, the real strength of Justified, like many great Westerns, lies in its compelling villains. The show’s antagonists are thoroughly modern – drug traffickers, crooked politicians, and white supremacists – and Walton Goggins’ Boyd Crowder stands out as the central villain throughout the series. Boyd is Raylan’s childhood friend, but represents the life Raylan could have led if he’d chosen a life of crime.

Many people have called the dialogue in Justified “hillbilly Shakespeare,” noting its similarity to the writing of Elmore Leonard. Unlike the straightforward dialogue in Reacher, which focuses on moving the plot forward, or the often dramatic conversations in Yellowstone, Justified features characters—especially Raylan and Boyd—who engage in sharp, witty verbal sparring. This makes the show’s conversations just as exciting as its action scenes.
