As a long-time fan of the Mad Max franchise who has witnessed the apocalyptic wasteland unfold across five epic films, I eagerly await the arrival of “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” on August 16. While I’ve grown accustomed to the high-octane action and visceral storytelling that this series is known for, I must admit my anticipation was somewhat tempered by the film’s box office performance.
You can soon catch the new installment of the “Mad Max” series, titled “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” streaming at your convenience from August 16 onwards.
“Furiosa’s Tale: A Mad Max Epic” was unveiled at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May, receiving a prolonged seven-minute standing ovation. Upon its release to cinemas, it garnered a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Nevertheless, its performance at the worldwide box office was not as impressive, accumulating $172.8 million against a production budget of $168 million.
In this upcoming movie, Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the role of Furiosa, previously portrayed by Charlize Theron in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” alongside Chris Hemsworth. The storyline revolves around, “Having been taken from the Sacred Land of the Many Mothers, young Furiosa is captured by a powerful motorcycle gang led by the tyrant Dementus. As they traverse the Wasteland, they encounter the Citadel, controlled by the ruler Immortan Joe. In their power struggle, Furiosa finds herself in a relentless journey to return home.”
The remaining actors in the ensemble are Lachy Hulme, John Howard, Angus Sampson, Tom Burke, Alyla Browne, George Shevtsov, Charlee Fraser, Elsa Pataky, Josh Helman, and Nathan Jones.
Owen Gleiberman, EbMaster’s primary film critic, characterized the movie as having a rhythm that starts and stops like a journey (picaresque). He went on to say that the movie is visually captivating in a haunting way but fails to reach the greatness of “Mad Max” for him. In other words, although it will have dedicated fans who passionately argue its merits, he believes it falls short of being a true masterpiece in the “Mad Max” series.
You can find “Mad Max,” “Mad Mad 2: The Road Warrior,” “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (the other four films in the franchise) all streaming on Max as well.
