‘Fugue,’ Set in Peruvian Amazon, Debuts Trailer Ahead of Edinburgh, Lima Premieres (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has traveled the globe in pursuit of cinematic masterpieces, I must say that the upcoming film “Fugue” (Fuga) has piqued my interest with its compelling narrative and unique approach to storytelling. The hybrid format, the non-professional cast, and the collaboration with local communities promise a fresh perspective on a tragic chapter in Peruvian history – the terror inflicted by the Shining Path during the ‘dirty war’.

The debut trailer is out now for “Fugue” (Fuga), making its worldwide premiere concurrently at the Edinburgh and Lima Film Festivals. This unique production, a blend of genres, is helmed by directors Mary Jiménez and Bénédicte Liénard.

I’ll be honoring Jiménez by showcasing three of her renowned masterpieces: “Del Verbo Amar,” “Loco Lucho,” and “In the Name of Tania.” These films will be screened as a fitting tribute.

The story “Fugue” unfolds in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, where the brutal actions of the terrorist group Shining Path, characterized by their hatred and violence towards homosexuals, wreak havoc. A young shaman named Saor Sax escorts Valentina’s corpse back to the village for burial.

“Fuga” is the sequel to the filmmakers’ previous work, titled “In the Name of Tania,” which was filmed in the Peruvian Amazon. They explained that “Fuga” delves into the untold narratives of homosexual individuals who were targeted by the terrorist groups Tupac Amaru and Shining Path during Peru’s internal conflict (1970-2000), often suffering in silence and shame without being heard or acknowledged. This generation, which endured persecution, has yet to find its voice. The filmmakers collaborated with queer artist Saor Sax, who transcends traditional gender roles, serving as a beacon of defiance against an Amazon society that is heavily influenced by evangelistic morality.

In the movie “Fugue,” the narrative style is divided equally: one side reflects real-life events while the other is a product of the filmmakers’ creative minds. Filmmakers, working on location with a limited budget and untrained actors, crafted what they refer to as “artisan cinema” – a collaborative effort with local residents and a compact crew.

“They shared that it would be unthinkable to have a professional actor step into any of the roles in ‘Fugue,’ as this was their major hurdle – the cast are ordinary people living in the villages where they filmed. They spent five months there, immersing themselves in the project and making the film a collective endeavor, embracing its complexity.”

The “Fugue” cast features Saor Sax, as well as Valentina Linares Gonzales, Miguel Gomez Grandes, Dimas Garcia Torres, and Willy Pinchi Isuiza.

As a keen observer, I’d like to highlight that the skilled cinematographer in this production is Virginie Surdej. The talented team of editors, comprising Marie-Hélène Dozo, Jiménez, Liénard, and Octavio Iturbe, are also instrumental in shaping the final product with their deft hands.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’d like to share some interesting production details about the film I’m currently engrossed in. This cinematic gem is brought to life by the visionary Hanne Phlypo, who serves as its producer. Alongside her, we have an impressive team of co-producers that includes Digna Sinke, Pilar Peredo, Edgard Tenembaum, and Isabel Madueño Medina. Together, they have poured their collective passion and expertise into this captivating production.

As a filmmaker with extensive experience in the industry, I have had the pleasure of working with various production companies to bring my creative visions to life. One collaboration that stands out is the project produced by Clin d’Oeil Films, in cooperation with SNG Film, Tu Vas Voir, Perpetua Cine, Cinetroupe, RTBF Télévision Belge-Unité Documentaire, and Shelter Prod. Each of these companies brought unique perspectives and expertise to the table, resulting in a truly remarkable production that was a joy to be a part of. This experience taught me the importance of collaboration and trusting in the talents of others to elevate my work to new heights.

The production is backed by several entities, including:
