As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the 2018 city-building survival simulator, Frostpunk, is getting a stunning makeover with Unreal Engine 5! The masterminds behind it, 11 bit Studios, have unveiled its new incarnation titled Frostpunk 1886. This upgraded version promises fresh content and will even support official mods, making the gaming experience more diverse and engaging than ever before.
11 bit Studios announced in a press statement that they plan to keep adding fresh content to Frostpunk 2’s sequel, but they also wish to establish a new base for the original game since their self-developed Liquid Engine, which was initially used to create the first Frostpunk, is no longer being advanced.
As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that we’re leveraging Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 for our upcoming remake. However, let me clarify that Frostpunk 1886, scheduled for release in 2027, is not merely a visual upgrade. Instead, it promises fresh content, innovative mechanics, new laws, and a compelling new narrative path for players to explore as they navigate the challenges of managing a settlement in a chilling post-apocalyptic alternate history. The title “1886” holds significance within our game’s universe, marking the initial onset of the Great Storm over New London.
1886’s Frostpunk remake will now offer official mod support, a feature highly anticipated by the game’s community, which was previously unattainable due to technical constraints with the Liquid Engine. The creators, 11 bit, have hinted at the possibility of additional DLC content in the future.
11-bit Studios initiated development of Frostpunk in 2025, as stated early in 2025. They highlighted that the upcoming remake would offer a more detailed insight into its modifications, with further updates to be revealed in the ensuing months. Simultaneously, they underlined their ongoing commitment to creating Frostpunk 2.
During this period, enthusiasts can anticipate a time when Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 will develop simultaneously – two routes progressing together, both nurturing the concept of survival in the harsh, eternal cold, according to the announcement.
1886 Edition of Frostpunk appears set to debut only on PC through Steam at the moment, with no current news about a possible console launch. Originally launched on PC in 2018, and later on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2019, Frostpunk is poised to release its sequel, Frostpunk 2, exclusively on consoles this year.
