From Season 3 Episode 3 recap: ‘Mouse Trap’

As a longtime fan of From, I must say that this show has truly outdone itself with its third season. The plot twists and turns are more intriguing than ever before, keeping me on the edge of my seat each week.

In From Season 3 Episode 3, titled ‘Mouse Trap’, the food situation appears to have improved slightly for most Fromville residents, except for Fatima. However, their overall circumstances remain dire.

In the second episode of Season 3, I found myself deeply immersed in the heartrending consequences of Tian-Chen’s passing. Despite scavenging sustenance from the forest with Jim, this fortuitous find prevented me from bidding a final farewell to my mom – a poignant reality that still lingers in my thoughts.

In the actual world, Victor’s father, Henry, became convinced of Tabitha’s tale upon uncovering her link to his deceased spouse, Miranda. Meanwhile, it was Jim who received another ominous phone call, this time supposedly from his departed son, Thomas.

There remains an abundance of unresolved queries as we delve into Season 3, and the latest installment only deepens the enigma. Ahead lies a spoiler-filled discussion, so beware!

An ominous warning

From Season 3 Episode 3 recap: ‘Mouse Trap’

Starting from Season 3, Episode 3 continues the storyline, finding Jim (Eion Bailey) engaged in a phone conversation, but it swiftly emerges this isn’t actually his son. Instead, it appears to be a mysterious figure with the aim of tormenting him.

The question is asking Jim why he allowed his mother to leave and if he wished for her death, implying that he no longer loved her. However, the sentence can be rephrased more gently to ask: “Jim, what made you say goodbye to your mom? Was there a reason you felt she should depart or even pass away? Was it perhaps because feelings had changed between you two?” To which Jim replies, “Could you please stop asking, I’d rather not discuss this.

Similar to the fellow on the radio during Season 1, it gives a foreboding message, advising against letting Julie (Hannah Cheramy) and Ethan (Simon Webster) venture out as the day gets late.

Jim dashes outside to discover them feeding the animals and tells them to return inside. Boyd (Harold Perrineau) signals his arrival by ringing the bell, and Jim remarks, “Things are becoming more troublesome here, aren’t they?” And he’s not far off the mark.

In the real world, Victor’s father Henry stirs awake to find Tabitha down in the basement, having spent the entire night there seeking answers. As she narrates the events of the night she departed from Fromville, she notices a sound outside – bottles tinkling.

Unaware of its importance, Henry mentions, “As for those bottles, they’re dangling on the tree out in our backyard. You know, she used to nickname it the ‘bottle tree,’ referring to Miranda.

Boyd’s monster plan

From Season 3 Episode 3 recap: ‘Mouse Trap’

In the town of Fromville, Victor continues to focus on his tree mapping projects. A specific one located near Colony House catches his eye, and he begins excavating there.

In the meantime, Boyd is attempting to persuade Ellis (Corteon Moore) that they should capture one of those grinning creatures, suggesting that perhaps a charm could hold it within a trap if they manage to catch it.

Ellis mentions they’re clueless about certain topics, to which Boyd suggests, “Perhaps it’s past due that we educate ourselves. We can no longer afford to tread lightly and stay in our comfort zone.

I step into the room, sensing an undercurrent of unease. Donna, my coworker, notices the tension too. Ellis presses Boyd to disclose his plan, and let me tell you, she’s just as opposed to it as he is. She thinks it’s a recipe for disaster, even a death sentence.

Boyd already killed a monster in From Season 2, but he hasn’t caught one yet. “We catch one, we make it talk,” he says.

However, Donna clarifies, “We’ve blasted those things straight on with shotguns, but instead of reacting like humans, they just smile. They aren’t like us.

When she observes Boyd’s distress, she realizes they both share a desire for vengeance over Tian-Chen’s (Elizabeth Moy) demise. However, she understands that this isn’t the right approach.

Fatima’s hunger strikes again

From Season 3 Episode 3 recap: ‘Mouse Trap’

The camera shifts to Colony House, revealing further details about Fatima’s (Pegah Ghafoori) situation. You might recall that in the third season’s second episode, Fatima was provided with medication for her morning sickness.

But then something strange happened: she started feeding on rotten vegetables like she’d never eaten before. This led to the theory that Fatima and Ellis’ baby is a monster, although this is all just speculation at this stage.

Currently, she descends to the lower level, where the deceased cow has been portioned out and one resident is preparing steak. The odor makes Fatima feel nauseous, prompting her to step outside, where she discovers a pile of rotten vegetables.

This time around, I’m back to snacking, but Tillie (Deborah Grover) catches me in the act. In a flash, I abandon my meal and take off running.

Meanwhile, Jade (David Alpay), Kristi (Chloe Van Landschoot), Kenny (Ricky He), along with some fellow townsfolk, venture into the forest again to collect additional supplies of fresh produce for their settlement.

They visit the identical location where Jim and Kenny discovered the field of crops, and there, eerie statues stand guard outside a log cabin. Kenny urges everyone to concentrate on the job they have in hand.

The original bottle tree

From Season 3 Episode 3 recap: ‘Mouse Trap’

The situation seems grim for the Matthews household. Ethan inquires anxiously about what will become of Tabitha’s remains, which sets Jim off. Following this exchange, Ethan and Julie leave in a huff, and instead of answering the home phone when it rings, Jim decides to hang up.

As I delve deeper into this mystery, Tabitha’s questions lead me to the bottle tree, one of Miranda’s artistic creations, according to Henry. The one we see in the yard lacks an opening, but that’s just because it’s not the genuine article – it’s a reproduction instead.

Originally, the tree known as the Bottle Tree is located a short distance from several towns, and it was here that Henry and Miranda took LSD just prior to Miranda experiencing visions of kids imprisoned in a tower. Now, Tabitha insists that Henry immediately takes her to the genuine tree.

Meanwhile, elsewhere, Boyd is setting up a monster trap inside the church by himself, but not entirely. Instead, the spirit of Father Rudra, portrayed by Shaun Majumder, is present, expressing doubts about his strategy.

As he continues to goad him, Boyd reveals that it’s not a trap at all – it’s a memory board to honor the names of the people who have died in Fromville, including Tian-Chen.

At Sara’s residence, Victor arrives, requesting a blanket for building a fort and narrating a tale. He communicates this to her.

A horrible surprise in the woods

From Season 3 Episode 3 recap: ‘Mouse Trap’

Later on, we observe Fatima being visited by Tillie, who doesn’t suspect anything and attributes her behavior to intense pregnancy cravings.

Fatima confides in her about feeling isolated since Ellis seems genuinely content for the first time in a while.

She admits, “I’m unable to express my fear to him,” but wonders aloud, “Might there be an issue with the newborn?” However, Tillie comforts her by saying, “It’s common for first-time mothers to have such concerns.

Venturing deep within the forest, I find myself embroiled in a dispute with fellow volunteers. Feeling frustrated, I decide to take my leave and relieve myself in the snowy wilderness. However, upon closer inspection of the snow, I notice a collection of blood-stained stones. As I gaze towards a nearby tree, I’m startled by the sight of a deceased man with a horrifying stab wound to his eye.

Approaching, I noticed the man stirring. He clutched at his throat, startling me so much that I let out a terrified shriek. Suddenly, it seemed like Jade was in a struggle, but there was no one else around.

After coming to his senses, Jade recognizes that he’s experiencing hallucinations once more. This sends him into a panic and he decides it’s best to depart, despite the others attempting to dissuade him, arguing that he might not reach the talisman hut before sunset.

Instead of choosing to remain inside the isolated cabin, Jade decides to take the risk and ventures into the forest. In hot pursuit is Kristi, but she unfortunately falls victim to a bear trap during her chase. This sudden incident causes Jade to halt in his steps, and he, along with the others, make an effort to free Kristi from the dangerous contraption.

Cicadas on the bus

From Season 3 Episode 3 recap: ‘Mouse Trap’

At Colony House, Tillie persuades Fatima to have her Tarot cards read. Just as Fatima inquires about her child’s well-being, a bird unexpectedly swoops through the window, creating a flurry of activity around the house before colliding with the wall and perishing.

It doesn’t seem like a positive sign. Incidentally, Jade feels they require something to gain an advantage when dealing with the bear trap.

He heads over to the creepy effigies to steal a couple of metal bars. If we know anything about From so far, it’s that this is probably a bad idea.

Fortunately, Kristi is freed. However, as they plan to realign Kristi’s broken foot, Jade experiences another chilling premonition: a deceased individual advances toward him, drinking blood from a skull.

Kristi snaps him out of it, and they help bring her to the log cabin before it gets dark outside.

In town, Randall is relaxing on a bus when, all at once, a group of cicadas appears. Suddenly, Boyd shows up, and Randall seems to regain consciousness. It’s unclear if Randall is experiencing visions or coping with the aftermath of Season 2 events, which may include PTSD symptoms.

In simpler terms, Boyd proposes to Randall that they should exchange places for the night so that Boyd can witness the monsters appearing from the forest. He expresses this idea by saying, “It seems like it’s high time we made some changes in our surroundings.

The bracelet is back

From Season 3 Episode 3 recap: ‘Mouse Trap’

In the closing moments of Episode 3 from Season 3, an unusual event takes place, and it’s connected to the bracelet.

In Season 1, didn’t you notice the time when Tabitha stumbled upon the bracelet she crafted for Jim way back when? This find was quite chilling, considering Jim had misplaced it on the very same night that Julie was born.

Now, the item is kept in Henry’s car’s glove compartment. When she queries him about its origin, he asserts that Miranda crafted it for him. This statement infuriates Tabitha; she feels trapped in Fromville, but Henry seems oblivious to her concerns.

In an attempt to exit the car, she asks him to stop, but he prevents her. A scuffle ensues, causing the car to unexpectedly move ahead, eventually colliding with another vehicle due to their altercation.

Tabitha stirs awake in an ambulance’s rear compartment, sharing the space with Henry. She regains her orientation. Consistent with its signature style, the episode concludes with a jaw-dropping turn of events.

On their way to the hospital, they encounter an obstacle – a fallen tree blocking the road. It turns out that infamous tree is known as The Fallen Tree, which signals their arrival in Fromville again. This time, along with her usual self, she’s accompanied by the paramedics and Henry.

The narrative will pick up from the fourth episode of Season 3, airing on MGM+ this coming Sunday, October 13. For a recap of Season 3 Episode 1, you can find our analysis here.
