‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel Series at Peacock Taps Brad Caleb Kane as New Showrunner

As a seasoned movie reviewer with a soft spot for horror classics, I must say that the appointment of Brad Caleb Kane as the new creator, showrunner, and executive producer of “Crystal Lake” has me grinning from ear to ear like a slasher villain himself. Having grown up in the heyday of the slasher flick, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia, much like the feeling one gets when they find their old hockey mask hiding in the back of their parents’ attic.

The “Crystal Lake” prequel series of “Friday the 13th”, previously unknown, now welcomes Brad Caleb Kane into his roles as the creator, head writer, and executive producer.

The series originates from A24 and was commissioned on Peacock in 2022. Kane’s appointment coincides with about three months since the initial series creator, Bryan Fuller, was dismissed from the production.

The storyline of this series remains undisclosed, but it’s worth noting that in the initial 1980 movie, Jason Voorhees was a child who tragically drowned at Camp Crystal Lake. His mother, Pamela, sought vengeance against the counselors she believed were responsible for his demise. Subsequently, Jason emerged as the main antagonist from the second film onwards in the franchise.

Kane stated, “Ever since I witnessed Jason Voorhees pop an eye out of its socket (in stunning 3D!) when I was eight years old, I felt my creative journey would eventually intersect with the Man Behind The Mask. Growing up during the era of slasher films was a defining part of my childhood, and there’s nothing more synonymous with this genre than ‘Friday The 13th.’ I’m incredibly thrilled about the prospect of being part of this legendary series, especially collaborating with daring partners like Peacock and A24.”

Currently, Kane is working on his second horror prequel series in a row. He’s just finished production for the upcoming HBO show “IT: Derry Calling,” where he served as co-showrunner and executive producer. Previously, he has also worked as a writer on shows such as “Warrior,” “Tokyo Vice,” “Fringe,” and “Black Sails.”

He is repped by Kaplan/Perrone and attorney Tara Kole

Earlier news mentioned that Victor Miller, the scriptwriter of the initial movie within this series, continues to be a part of the project as an executive producer. This role is also held by Marc Toberoff, Robert M. Barsamian, and Robert P. Barsamian. The production company handling this is A24.
