Fresh Faces: Sasha Calle Rides ‘Wardriver’ Into the Cannes Market

In “Wardriver,” directed by Rebecca Thomas and distributed by Highland Film Group at Cannes, Sasha Calle embodies a character who seems to fit the femme fatale mold, yet her true intentions remain shrouded in mystery.

The movie chronicles Dane DeHaan playing the role of hacker Cole, who’s tasked by criminal Oscar (Mamoudou Athie) with stealing money from Sarah, portrayed by another character. However, when they discover that Sarah’s funds are connected to someone in the mafia, Cole endeavors to return the money and protect Sarah simultaneously. Interestingly, Sarah is described as a complex individual by her on-screen counterpart.

As a fervent admirer, I’d express it this way: “She’s quite adaptable, in a sense, without revealing much. Portraying a character who undergoes multiple transformations of herself throughout a movie is truly fascinating.

For Calle, it felt like quite an expansive role to embody such a multifaceted character. She expresses great admiration for Thomas and DeHaan, reminiscing that she was among the last to join the project, communicating with Thomas over Zoom and then, just a few weeks later, arriving on set in Utah.

Calle recalls her time spent with Rebecca and Dane vividly, and she truly likes them both. Therefore, she hopes the film will be successful,” Calle expresses.

Given her diverse acting roles, ranging from superhero films to independent productions, it could be suitable for the actress to portray a versatile, shape-shifting character.

Born in Boston and educated at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in LA, Calle kickstarted her career on the soap opera “The Young and the Restless,” earning a Daytime Emmy nomination. Soap operas are known for their rapid pace and intense demands, with Calle explaining that they require filming five episodes within four days, and each day involves shooting approximately 50 pages of script.

She explains: “As you progress with this job, your brain will adapt to using the particular muscles it needs. Prior to this position, I was barely getting by, living paycheck to paycheck. But once I got this job, my life took a turn for the better.

In 2023, Calle made her first significant acting appearance as Supergirl in “The Flash,” thereby becoming the initial Latin actress to portray this movie character.

When director Andy Muschietti phoned me and revealed the role I’d be taking on, it was a part I hadn’t realized I yearned to play,” Calle expresses. “I sensed that she would have an immense impact on me, and that moment was a profoundly moving one for me.

She explains that their interpretation of the character helped shatter some boundaries, as it was unique and daring, presenting a fresh take on the story.

Despite the fact that a new actor is set to portray Supergirl’s story in the DC universe, Calle reminisces warmly about her time with the character: “I continue to feel a sense of pride when I look back. I still adore her deeply, and it brings a smile to my face thinking about all those memories.

In her latest projects, Calle appears in “In the Summers” and “On Swift Horses.” In the latter movie, she portrays Sandra, a neighbor to a duo played by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Will Poulter. Sandra is a confident, Latina character with a deep connection to her community, standing out against Muriel’s more reserved demeanor, portrayed by Edgar-Jones. Despite their differences, the characters develop a romantic relationship.

Calle comments that he found Sandra’s character captivating, and if given the chance, he could have continued following her story indefinitely.

Next, Calle will be featured in the movie “RIP,” alongside Boston natives Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who are also the producers under their company, Artists Equity. Additionally, she’s currently involved in the production of Season 2 for the Apple TV+ series “Sugar,” led by Colin Farrell. Moreover, Calle has her own music project under development.

Calle emphasizes a deep passion for the artwork he produces, with no alternate path in sight regarding his life. He is certain that he must persist in crafting meaningful and personally significant art.
