Freedom Wars Remastered releases for PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC Steam on January 10, 2025

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the announcement of Freedom Wars Remastered has me absolutely thrilled! Having grown up playing Monster Hunter and God Eater on my trusty PlayStation Vita, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia at the prospect of diving back into this unique world.

Bandai Namco has unexpectedly disclosed that they’ll launch the enhanced version of Freedom Wars, titled “Freedom Wars Remastered,” for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam next year, specifically on January 10, 2025. It’s worth mentioning that Japan will receive the console versions a day earlier on January 9.

Freedom Wars is a team-based role-playing game with action elements that initially came out on the PlayStation Vita in 2014 from Sony Computer Entertainment. Its gameplay resembles games like Monster Hunter and God Eater, as they were popular in Japan during the same period. What sets it apart is its unique Panopticon setting, where players can reduce their sentence years by completing missions and rescuing other civilians.

4Gamer and Famitsu have shared interviews with Takashi Tsukamoto and Tetsunosuke Seki from Dimps, shedding additional light on the remaster project. Notably, Tsukamoto, who previously served as the director for the original game, is now serving as the development producer for the remaster. Originally, Dimps aimed to develop a sequel to Freedom Wars, but they were given approval by Sony to release a remaster instead. Later, Bandai Namco agreed to publish this remastered version.

In the interviews, we learned more about the specifics of the upcoming remaster. Instead of just Japanese voiceovers, it will include full English ones too. However, players can only select from Japan’s 47 prefectures as their associated Panopticon, unlike the Western releases on Vita which offered various global cities. Unfortunately, this game won’t support cross-play with other platforms; it will only have cross-play within PlayStation, connecting PS4 and PS5 versions internally.
