As a long-time MMORPG enthusiast with countless hours spent immersed in various virtual worlds, I find Amazon Games’ latest announcement about Throne and Liberty to be both intriguing and promising. Having experienced pay-to-win mechanics in some games that left a bitter taste, I am always on the lookout for titles that prioritize player self-expression, accessibility, and rewarding optional purchases.

MMORPG enthusiasts have been debating the Throne and Liberty game since its debut in the Korean market back in December 2023. The title has generated controversy due to its pay-to-win mechanics, but it’s also undeniably intriguing. We’ve recently been given a release date for English-speaking markets, and now the developers have shared details on the modifications they’ll make to the game’s business model – different from what was employed in South Korea.

I understand your concerns about perceived pay-to-win mechanics in our game. To set the record straight, I want to share with you the principles that shape my decisions as a developer. These values are not just empty words, but the very foundation upon which our business model is built. Let me walk you through them:

Here are the rules that govern Amazon Games:

  1. Player self-expression is paramount.
  2. Combat and power upgrades must be accessible to all players.
  3. Purchasing items from our in-game shop must feel rewarding, but never necessary.

Currencies in Throne and Liberty

In the new MMORPG from Amazon Games, we will have three currencies at our disposal:

  1. Lucent, which can be purchased for real money, but also obtained in various PvP events (castle sieges, selling items in the auction house – other possibilities will be added in the future).
  2. Sollant, which it will be can be acquired through various actions and activities. This currency is primarily used to purchase items from NPCs related to crafting, upgrades, and other essential systems.
  3. Ornamental Coins, which can be obtained through special in-game events (such as collecting lore books or Twitch Drops). The currency will also be available through a free battle pass. It will be released in a separate store.

Auction House in Throne and Liberty

In simpler terms, the Auction House is a player-managed marketplace where you can buy and sell gear and other items. Unlike other MMOs, this game allows you to acquire Lucents at the Auction House and save them for future use.

The developer notes that the Auction House’s finished appearance could differ from its portrayed version in the announcement due to ongoing development. Additionally, it mentions that this marketplace will interact with another system within the game – taxation.

A specific guild can impose an extra tax, besides the standard tax taken from each auction sale, if they control a castle. The revenue gained through this additional tax can be used for organizing PvP activities. Guild members can earn these funds by engaging in these events.

Pass system in Throne and Liberty

You can choose between two versions in this situation. Each choice offers a free and paid option. The premium version can additionally be obtained using Lucent coins.

Leveling Pass – available as a one-time purchase. This will allow players to obtain materials and items that accelerate the leveling process.

Battle Pass – will work on the same principle as similar systems in other games: it will provide new items, materials, and currency every season.

In addition to this, the game “Throne and Liberty” offers an in-game shop where players can use real money to acquire Lucents. This store also contains cosmetic items such as outfits, emoticons, and more. However, these items cannot be traded in the Auction House. Currently, Early Access packages are the only other monetization method, granting early access to the game up to 5 days before its official release. Notably, players who purchase Early Access will play on distinct servers apart from those who start playing at the launch.

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can tell you that the upcoming release of “Throne and Liberty” is something to get excited about. Mark your calendars for September 17, 2024, because this free-to-play game will be available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. And if you’re eager to get a sneak peek before the official launch, sign up for the open beta tests taking place from July 18 to 23 on those very same platforms. Trust me, it’s an opportunity not to be missed!
