As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless film franchises, I must say that the return of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with Freddie Prinze Jr. on board is an exciting development indeed! The original film was a cornerstone of my adolescence, and to see Prinze revisiting his role in this sequel brings a sense of nostalgia that’s hard to ignore.

Actor Freddie Prinze Jr. is set to be part of the new cast for “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” a follow-up to the 1997 horror movie where he previously shared the screen with Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe.

Among the original actors, Hewitt is currently in discussions to reappear in her character’s role. Until Hewitt’s contract is officially signed, Prinze will share the screen with Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King. Initially, Camila Mendes was slated to feature in the movie; however, she has recently parted ways due to scheduling issues related to her role on “Riverdale.

The continuation’s location is uncertain, but the initial “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movie tells the story of four youngsters from a coastal village who are pursued by a murderer wielding a hook, a year after hiding a deadly car crash. This film was a box office hit, earning $125 million worldwide. It spawned two sequels: “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” (1998), starring Hewitt and Prinze Jr., and the direct-to-video remake “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.” Additionally, there’s an Amazon Prime series titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Since the release of “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” it has been disclosed that Prinze considered leaving the film due to the challenging working relationship he had with director Jim Gillespie. He claims this tension arose because the director favored casting Jeremy Sisto over him for the role eventually taken by Prinze, which led to some friction on set.

Each day, it was tough wrapping up work. Every day on that film set, I endured constant discomfort. Yet, this experience has uniquely equipped me for my career. In his horror podcast “That Was Pretty Scary,” Prinze expressed this sentiment. He’s eternally thankful to Jim for being so demanding because he hasn’t encountered anyone like him since then. No other director I’ve met thought it was acceptable to cross those boundaries. Essentially, I’ve been primed for every minor bully in the industry.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for her work on Netflix comedies such as “Do Revenge” and “Someone Great,” is set to direct the sequel in the horror series. She collaborated with Sam Lansky on the script, based on an initial draft by Leah McKendrick (“Scrambled”). Neal Moritz will once again take on the role of producer.

Sony Pictures will release the film in theaters on July 18, 2025.
