‘Freakier Friday’ Trailer: Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan Swap Bodies Once Again 22 Years After Original Movie

The first look at Nisha Ganatra’s “Freakier Friday” movie has been revealed, featuring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in the leading roles. This new film is actually a continuation of the 2003 comedy “Freaky Friday,” where Curtis and Lohan played Tess and Anna Coleman, a mother-daughter pair.

As stated in Disney’s press release, the upcoming sequel presents an unexpected turn with a multigenerational angle. The story unfolds years after Tess and Anna initially exchanged bodies, now with Anna having her own daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter. They grapple with the complexities of blending two families, learning that perhaps love’s magic can repeat itself. The trailer hints at a new development – a four-way body swap involving Anna, Tess, Anna’s daughter, and step-daughter, each waking up in a different body this time around.

In addition to Curtis and Lohan, we have some familiar faces rejoining the cast: Chad Michael Murray, Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao. For this sequel, Manny Jacinto from “The Acolyte”, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan known for her role in “Never Have I Ever”, Sophia Hammons, and Julia Butters have also joined the team.

The initial movie, inspired by Mary Rodgers’ 1972 book with the same title, focuses on Tess and Anna – a mother-daughter duo. Widowed Tess is busy planning a grand wedding, while musician Anna readies herself for a crucial performance that could determine her band’s fate. After receiving a mysterious fortune cookie, they end up swapping bodies, leading them to learn acceptance towards each other.

Disney confirmed in March 2024 that the sequel was progressing, with Ganatra taking the director’s chair. This filmmaker and scriptwriter has previously worked on episodes for Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales” and Max’s “And Just Like That…”, and directed movies such as “The High Note,” featuring Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross, and “Late Night,” featuring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson.

Andrew Gunn, the original film producer, is teaming up with ex-Disney executive Kristin Burr for the sequel’s production. The script is being penned by Jordan Weiss, the creative mind behind “Dollface”.

The film is set to release in 2025. Watch the trailer below.
