Francis Ford Coppola Sues Variety for $15 Million

As a long-time admirer of Francis Ford Coppola‘s extraordinary body of work, I find myself deeply troubled by the ongoing saga surrounding his latest film, “Megalopolis.” The director’s decision to sue Variety over libel allegations is, in my humble opinion, a testament to his unwavering commitment to upholding truth and integrity in the face of baseless claims.

I’ve found myself embroiled in a prolonged saga regarding my movie, “Megalopolis,” as directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Recently, he took legal action against Variety magazine for libel, alleging false claims made in an article published on July 26th. The article accused him of acting with impunity on the film’s set, and Coppola is now seeking $15 million in damages from Variety Media LLC and the journalists Brent Lang and Tatiana Siegel.

The text initially states, “Some individuals possess creativity, while an extremely small number are creative geniuses.” It then proceeds, “In the realm of filmmaking, the plaintiff Francis Ford Coppola (referred to as ‘Coppola’) is a creative genius. There are some who harbor feelings of jealousy and resentment towards such brilliance. Consequently, they spread malicious and unfounded rumors about those whom they envy.

In response to the claim made in the article about Megalopolis, the suit argues that there were indeed traditional checks and balances during filming. Furthermore, it states that these accusations were either intentionally false or made carelessly without verifying their truthfulness. Coppola requested a retraction from Variety, but the site failed to comply. This article was published two months following The Guardian’s report about allegations against Coppola for attempting to kiss female extras in an attempt to put them in a certain mood.

In his career spanning over 60 years, nothing compares to the challenging yet creatively successful odyssey of making “Megalopolis” into a movie. This was a joint effort of numerous artists, from background actors to leading stars, and I always showed them my utmost respect and deep appreciation, Coppola stated in a release to People on September 12. He strongly condemned any publication, particularly those from the established media sector, for using undercover video footage and anonymous sources to further their financial interests.

Two days ago, on September 9th, according to Variety’s report, Megalopolis actress Lauren Pagone filed a lawsuit in Georgia against Coppola and others, alleging civil battery, assault, and negligence for failing to prevent sexual harassment. The lawsuit claims that Pagone was not given any information about the rules regarding sexual content or nudity on set, nor was she warned about what she might encounter during filming. (Deadline)
