Francine Pascal, ‘Sweet Valley High’ Creator, Dies at 92

I’m deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Francine Pascal, a trailblazing author and creator of the beloved “Sweet Valley High” series. Her groundbreaking work not only captivated millions of readers but also paved the way for the modern teen drama genre.

Francine Pascal, renowned for writing the beloved “Sweet Valley High” teenage book series, passed away at the age of 92.

On a Sunday, Pascal passed away in New York City. According to The New York Times, the reason for his demise was lymphoma; this information was shared with the paper by his daughter, Laurie Wenk-Pascal.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the exciting moment when “Sweet Valley High” graced our screens for the first time back in 1983. It all started with a casual remark from a friend who lamented the lack of a teen soap opera to rival the popular ’80s drama, “Dallas.” Inspired by this conversation, I found myself eagerly jumping on the opportunity to create such a series. Introducing Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, two fabulous blonde twins from sunny California! The books that followed were nothing short of a phenomenon, with hundreds of sequels and spin-offs bringing the twins’ lives to life at various stages – from middle school all the way through college. And let me tell you, things got pretty wild at times! There were some titles that veered off the beaten path, taking us on thrilling adventures filled with murders and even a dash of the supernatural!

I followed Pascal’s work closely, and though she penned only the first twelve books herself, she sketched out the plans for many more. A popular TV series based on her writings aired for four consecutive seasons with Brittany and Cynthia Daniel portraying the lead roles. In 2009, there were reports of Diablo Cody crafting a movie adaptation of Pascal’s books for Universal. However, unfortunately, this project did not come to fruition.

Apart from its impressive sales of over 200 million copies, “Sweet Valley High” significantly shaped the contemporary teen drama genre. Shows like “Degrassi,” “Beverly Hills, 90210,” which debuted in the late ’80s and early ’90s, and later series such as “Clueless,” “Dawson’s Creek,” and “The OC” were all influenced by the novels’ success. These shows emerged throughout the subsequent years.

2011 saw the debut of a fresh adult novel series titled “Sweet Valley Confidential,” which brought us back to the lives of the Wakefield twins in their thirties. The original series had concluded in 2003.

1932 saw the birth of Pascal in New York City. She pursued journalism at New York University and later worked for multiple publications such as True Confessions and Cosmopolitan. In 1977, her debut young adult novel, “Hangin’ Out With Cici,” was published and soon turned into a TV special. Apart from this, she authored several other novels and collaborated with her husband John Pascal on the soap opera “The Young Marrieds.” Sadly, John passed away in 1981.

Pascal is survived by two of her three daughters, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
