As a connoisseur of cinema with a penchant for stories that resonate deeply and challenge societal norms, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming project “Tropical Malaise”. Having followed the career of Jorge Cadena since his Special Jury Award-winning short “Flores del otro patio” at SXSW Film Festival 2023, I have no doubt that this film will be a masterpiece.
The production company Still Moving from France has teamed up with GoldenEggProduction based in Switzerland to collaboratively produce “Tropical Malaise” (“Malestar tropical”), a drama film set in Colombia, directed by Jorge Cadena. His short film “Flores del otro patio” received the Special Jury Award at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival.
“Among the 14 projects set for release is ‘Tropical Malaise,’ which will be showcased during the 2024 edition of San Sebastian’s Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum.”
Created by Gabriela Bussmann and Yan Decoppet from the Geneva studio GoldenEggProduction, the film titled “Tropical Malaise” is currently seeking funding, with plans for filming in early 2026.
The team of writers consists of Jacques Toulemonde, who collaborated on Ciro Guerra’s Academy Award-nominated film “Embrace of the Serpent,” and Mauricio Leal, director of Netflix’s “Story of a Crime – Mauricio Leal.” Additionally, it includes Carlos Cadena, a Colombian native who was trained in Switzerland, along with Juana del Río (“Goals Against”) and Li Aparicio Candama, co-writer of “Flowers from the Other Courtyard.”
Embedded within the fabric of Colombian society, “Tropical Malaise” tackles modern-day concerns, delving into various topics such as social, political, ecological, and LGBTQIA+ issues.
The movie revolves around a collective of activists, both queer and part of indigenous communities close to Colombia’s largest open-cast coal mine. Together, they engage in a potent and vibrant fight to uphold their right to live and preserve their land from ecological damage and cultural erosion.
The actors featured in Jorge Cadena’s acclaimed short film “Flores del otro patio” are included with the cast, among them being León David Salazar, Eudes Rosado, Rubén Barrios Rodríguez, Saray Nohemi Rebolledo Ospino, and Andru Suárez Rojas.
Producer’s Bussmann and Decoppet commented that Jorge Cadena’s artistic style, characterized by vibrant landscapes of the Caribbean and costumes inspired by popular culture, with an undercurrent of infectious activism, will create a distinctive piece that resonates beyond Colombia’s borders, touching on both universal and contemporary themes.
“Tropical Malaise” has won development funds from Media Desk Switzerland.
