Frameline Announces 2025 Colin Higgins Youth Filmmaker Grant Recipients – Film News in Brief

Remi Gabriel (“Barbie Boy”), Carmela Murphy, and AJ Dubler (“A Bird Hit My Window and Now I’m a Lesbian”) are among the 2025 Colin Higgins Youth Filmmaker Grant recipients, as EbMaster has exclusively learned.

Starting from 2023, our partnership with Frameline has been geared towards aiding LGBTQ+ movie directors financially. For this year’s filmmakers, we are offering a grant of $15,000 per individual to aid their future projects, and their films will be showcased at the 49th San Francisco International Festival for LGBTQ+ Movies.

In light of the systematic erosion of backing for LGBTQ+ art and artists, it’s up to our community to safeguard the future of queer cinema, while maintaining its profound legacy. For the past three years, Frameline and the Colin Higgins Foundation have been working together to achieve this very goal. We will persist in amplifying the voices and narratives of LGBTQ+ youth.

In the face of a systematic reduction in support for LGBTQ+ art and artists, it’s our community’s responsibility to shield the future of queer cinema, while keeping its deep-rooted history alive. For the last three years, Frameline and the Colin Higgins Foundation have been collaborating to achieve this, and we will carry on uplifting the stories and experiences of LGBTQ+ youth.

The scholarship bears the name of the late Higgins, a renowned filmmaker known for “Harold and Maude,” “9 to 5,” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” The event, Frameline49, takes place from June 18th through the 28th.
